Carolyn W. Mathias, of Clarence, a retired dietitian and teacher, died Wednesday in Harris Hill Nursing Facility, Lancaster. She was 92.

Born in Denver, the former Carolyn Werth earned a degree in clinical dietetics from Colorado State University in Fort Collins. She served as a clinic nutrition intern at the Francis Stern Food Clinic at Tufts University in Boston, Mass.

Mrs. Mathias taught student nurses in Pittsburgh, then came to the Buffalo area in 1949. After her four children completed elementary school, she took refresher courses and taught student nurses at Erie County Medical Center and Erie Community College and taught health education at the University at Buffalo. She also was a consulting dietitian at several area nursing homes and health care facilities.

A member of Clarence Presbyterian Church since 1952, she was an elder, trustee, choir member, Sunday school teacher and a member of Presbyterian Women. She also was active in the Girl Scouts, PTA, American Field Service and the League of Women Voters.

She and her husband of 60 years, Gerald E., a Westinghouse engineer, traveled extensively in all 50 states, every Canadian province and three continents, enjoying camping, cruising and Elderhostels. He died in 2004.

Survivors include three daughters, Karen Nelson, Lenore Clark and June; a son, Walter; a brother, Glenn Werth; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sept. 4 in Clarence Presbyterian Church, 9675 Main St., Clarence.
