Gertrude "Doty" Quinlan Ryan of Mahopac, N.Y. died May 21, 2020 at the grand age of 91. Born in N.Y.C. July 29, 1928, the daughter of Major Thomas J. Quinlan and Gertrude Harrington Quinlan both of proud Irish descent; the fourth of five children. Doty graduated from the College of New Rochelle in 1950 and later did graduate work at Western Connecticut State University.
On May 5,1951 she married Augustine J. Ryan also of proud Irish heritage, at St. Joseph's Church Bronxville, N.Y. Mr. Ryan died on July 4, 1992. Mrs. Ryan is survived by her two sons : A. John Ryan Jr.( Susan J. Gallagher ) and James F. Ryan ( Cheryl Anne Campbell Ryan ), five grandchildren: Kerry Ryan Peacock (Michael), Kevin C. Ryan, Madeline R. Ryan, Thomas A. J. Ryan and Brigid M. Ryan, and by her sister Jane Quinlan Watson. Doty was a teacher in the Mahopac Public School System for over 30 years, and did the bookkeeping for her husband's several businesses: lastly Gus Ryan's Mahopac Shell Station for many years.
Doty was an active member of the Mahopac Garden Club for 60 years. She was a staunch Kennedy Democrat and called representatives to share insights. She enjoyed lively political discussions over lovely family gatherings. She taught CCD at St. John's Catholic Church where she was a parishioner and volunteered in the food pantry. Doty maintained copious correspondance with numerous friends by personal handwritten notes; often including newspaper clippings of special interest to that individual. Doty loved the company of many family dogs and cats, she enjoyed needlepoint and knitting, playing bridge, reading, vacations on the shore at Long Beach Island, and holding annual "Camp Mahopac" for her grandchildren and nieces and nephews at their lakefront home.
Services will be held when the Coronavirus pandemic concerns are over. In lieu of flowers the family asks that small donations be made to the individual's favorite charity. She is in the care of: Dengler, Roberts and Perna Funeral Home East Amherst, N.Y.]
