I met Mary in 1991 when she moved to work at Birkbeck College at the University of London. She was my PhD co-supervisor, my academic "mother" and most of all my friend. When she moved back to the US, I visited her in San Diego and Bowling Green, and we met up at countless academic conferences. What do I remember most of Mary? Her wisdom, her political intellect, her wit, her kindness. Most of all I remember laughter - so much laughter. I will treasure the memories.

I am Mary’s brother Fran. Mary was a a faculty member in the Psychology Department at Bowling Green State University in Ohio until her retirement. BGSU awarded her Emeritus Status in 2019. The biographical sketch from that event is what I have posted above.

I met Mary in 1972 when we were both in the UB semester abroad program in Grenoble in our junior year. We were there to study French but probably spent more time traveling and exploring as much of Europe as we possibly could. That was the beginning of our long friendship that extended across miles and over more than 50 years. Mary frequently visited me in California, and when she decided to pursue her graduate studies at UC San Diego she became more than a friend—she became part of our family. We shared holidays and family events, and were there with her when she ran her first marathon and received her doctorate. After she left California, she returned most summers to stay with us and work on her research. 

Mary was the smartest and wittiest person I know. She was not only accomplished in her field of cognitive science but had a wide range of interests and hobbies. She succeeded at everything she tried. She was a great friend and I’m grateful to have enjoyed her friendship for so many years. I miss her terribly and will cherish the memories.

Mary was a very brilliant student. Our mothers were very close friends from their Nardin Academy days, and we lived in the same Parkside/  St Mark’s community  . I had not heard about Mary in many years as our Moms have both passed away, but they once spent a great deal of time together . The last time I spent time with Mary was in  1972 while  I was a student in Paris, and she came to visit.
