Richard Marsh Harding

Richard Harding, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, educator, and lifelong learner, passed away on September 24, 2026, at the age of 80.

Born on March 4, 1946, Richard was raised in Fairport, New York. His commitment to learning and service shaped much of his life. He was a graduate of Alfred University and the University of Arkansas, where he continued to build the foundation for a distinguished career in both military and civilian service.

Richard proudly served 21 years in the United States Army retiring at the rank of Lt. Colonel. During his military career, he received extensive training as an Army Ranger and Airborne officer, helicopter pilot, and Foreign Area Officer. Recognition of his contributions resulted in several Meritorious Service Medals. His assignments took him around the world, including overseas postings in Korea, Helsinki, and Germany. He also served at the Pentagon and as Professor of Military Science at Canisius College. His military service was marked by dedication, professionalism, and a lifelong commitment to serving his country.

Following his military career, Richard continued his professional service at the University at Buffalo, where he worked in the Departments of Otolaryngology and Epidemiology and Environmental Health. He brought the same curiosity, discipline, and dedication to his civilian career that had characterized his years in the Army.

Outside of work, Richard embraced life with enthusiasm. He was an avid skier and generously volunteered his time with the National Ski Patrol. He was also a competitive trap shooter, enjoying both the challenge of the sport and the camaraderie that came with it.

Reading was one of Richard’s greatest passions. His interests were wide-ranging, from the New York Times bestseller list to books and publications focused on international affairs and world events. He was naturally curious and always eager to learn something new. That curiosity extended to travel, and he enjoyed exploring destinations throughout the United States as well as traveling internationally.

Richard will be remembered for his service to his country, his dedication to his work, his love of learning and travel, and his enjoyment of the outdoors and the many activities that kept him engaged throughout his life. Most of all, he will be remembered by his family and friends for the life he shared with them and the lasting impression he made on those fortunate enough to know him.

He leaves behind a legacy of service, curiosity, adventure, and devotion to family that will continue to live on in those who loved him.

Visitation will be held at Dengler, Roberts, Perna Funeral Home, 8630 Transit Road, East Amherst, NY 14051 on October 5, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm where a Celebration of Life service and Military Honors will take place at 6:00 pm.
