(nee Smithley)
Age 92, passed away peacefully at her
daughter’s home in Wales, on January
21, 2022, under the care of Hospice.
Born in 1929, in Wales, NY, to Edna
(Heintz) and Norman Smithley. Betty
graduated from East Aurora High
School (at the age of 16) and went on
to work as a secretary at Marshall’s
Insurance Company on Main Street
in East Aurora. At 18 years old, Betty
married William Bruce Penfold. They
built a home on Big Tree Road in Wales,
filled it with eight children, and enough
love for eight more. In the little spare
time she had, she enjoyed sewing,
reading and writing. Her published
works included household hints for
other mothers, an editorial, in which she
lamented the deplorable act of abortion,
and a true story about her son Michael
that appeared in the 2018 anthology
Mothers of Angels: Living and Loving
After the Death of a Child. Betty was
predeceased by her husband Bruce, her
son Michael, and her brother John. She
is survived by seven children: William
Bruce Jr. (Laura), Bonita (Nick Page),
Gerald (Debbie), Mary (Mark) Laufer,
Teresa (Rob) Huston, Christine (David)
Clarke, Barbara (Michael) Ferry; 17
grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren;
one great-great-grandchild, and many
loving nieces and nephews. No prior
visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial
