She was born on June 30, 1956, in Augusta, Georgia, the daughter of the late Dr. John and Suzanne Handel. Suzanne was a devoted Christian and a faithful servant to the Lord throughout her life.
Suzanne was a gifted artist and a proud, award-winning member of the Roycrofters-at-Large Association (RALA) for 40 years, where her work was celebrated among fellow artisans who carried forward the Roycroft tradition of fine craftsmanship. Her creative spirit was matched by her devotion to teaching; for many years she shared her love of art with young students as an art teacher at Union Pleasant Elementary in Hamburg, NY, shaping the imaginations of generations of children.
Suzanne will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Robb Mair; her daughter, Michelle Martin (née Mair), and son-in-law, Andrew Martin; her son, Brad Mair, and daughter-in-law, Allison Mair (née Bisco); her three cherished grandchildren, John Martin, Anna Martin, and Greyson Mair; her cousins, Sharon, Donna, and Art; along with extended family and the countless students, colleagues, and fellow artists whose lives she touched. Suzanne was especially supported through this difficult time by the “Squirrells” from the East Aurora class of 1974 and her dear friend Karin Best.
Suzanne's artistry, warmth, and dedication to nurturing creativity in others leave behind a legacy that will continue through her family, her former students, and the artistic community she was so proud to be part of.
Donations in Sue’s memory can be made to the Roycrofters-At-Large Suzanne Mair Scholarship Fund (1054 Olean Rd, East Aurora, NY 14052) or the Salvation Army of Buffalo.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 18th, at 11:30 am at Baker Memorial Church, followed by a luncheon at the Roycroft Inn.
