

Bernard W. Dennler Sr., 85, of Glastonbury, the beloved husband of Pegge (Hooper) Dennler since February 23, 1952, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct 7th. He was born on June 28, 1930 a son of the late Harold Otto and Rose (Wilson) Dennler.
Bernard was a graduate of Glastonbury High School, 1948, served as an altar boy for St. Paul’s Church, he was a member of the Office of Civil Defense Force as a Civil Air Patrol Cadet and proudly served in the United States Air Force and Air National Guard during the Korean War. Bernie was a longtime parishioner of St. Paul’s Church of Glastonbury. Following in his father’s footsteps, he became a volunteer firefighter for the town of Glastonbury, Company 3, for many years, working his way up the ranks to acting Chief and Fire Chief of the Glastonbury Fire Department in 1992. As Chief, Bernie’s accomplishments included the establishment of a driver training program, junior firefighter cadet program, creation of an in-house training program that enables firefighters to be trained locally. He retired as Chief in 1995 ending a 46 year volunteer firefighting career, but continued to remain active in the fire department providing another 20 years of volunteer support & service to the town of Glastonbury. In addition to dedicating his time to the fire department, Bernie was a longtime employee since 1953 of Quality Name Plate, Inc., of East Glastonbury where he was Head of Manufacturing.
In addition to his cherished wife Pegge, of 63 years, Bernie is survived by his children; daughter Sharon Rose Dennler of Edgewood, FL., son Bernard W. Dennler, Jr. and his wife MaryGrace Adams Dennler of Colchester, daughter Nancy Ann Dennler of Cleveland, OH., grandchildren; Zachariah Shaskin & his wife Tabby, Maleana Spera, Lylette Ozimek, Bernard Dennler III, great grandson Will Issac Shaskin, sisters Mary Marshall & her partner Hank LeBel of Stafford Springs, and Sandy Robb & her husband Barrett of Spring Lake Heights, NJ., nieces and nephews; Michael Marshall & his partner Anita Ilieve, John & Anne Marshall, Debbie Audette, Maureen & Dan LaPrad, Todd & Heather Marshall, Heather & Rob Grasso, Sarah & Sam Chiarella, and many grand nieces, grand nephews, special friend, Rick Adams of Charlotte, NC., and several dear friends.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the East Glastonbury Volunteer Fire Department, 1089 Chestnut Hill Road, Glastonbury, CT 06033. In memory of Chief Dennler, all donations will be presented to a rural volunteer fire department for the enhancement of rural firefighting.
All are invited to attend calling hours on Friday, October 9, 2015 from 4-8pm at Glastonbury Funeral Home, 450 New London Tnpk., Glastonbury CT 06033. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, October 10, at 11am in St. Paul Church, 2577 Main St., Glastonbury. Everyone is asked to meet at church.
