With profound love and deep sorrow, we announce the unexpected passing of Carmen Meneses Montealegre at the age of 86, on February 16, 2026, in Wethersfield Connecticut. While her departure leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who loved her, her life stands as a powerful testament of strength, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to family and helping others seeking a better life.

She was born on June 30, 1939 in the rural community of Barragán, in Purificación, Tolima, Colombia. She was the daughter of the late Irene Montealegre and Luis Meneses Alcalá, and the beloved sister of Belarmina, Julio, Etelvina, Félix, Héctor, Marina, and Eliecer.

From a young age, Carmen demonstrated strength and a protective spirit. She treasured simple childhood memories, especially enjoying the fish her father caught in the Magdalena River — moments that deeply rooted her love for family and heritage. In 1949, she began her education at Escuela Santa Lucía under the guidance of her teacher, Rosa Evila Vanegas, where she excelled in mathematics.

Even as a child, she was courageous and loyal, defending her cousins Ofelia and Nieves at school. Though she did not complete her formal education, she never stopped learning. Life itself became her greatest teacher, and she carried its lessons with wisdom and resilience.

In search of opportunity, she moved to Ibagué, where she met Pedro Nel Gil, manager of the intermunicipal bus company Flota La Magdalena and father of her children, Sandra, Pedro, and Eliana. The family later relocated to Bogotá and eventually to Medellín, where they established their home for many years. There, Carmen embraced one of her greatest missions — opening doors for her family. One by one, she helped her brothers and sisters find opportunity in the “City of Eternal Spring,” where they built their homes and raised their families.

Guided by her determination to provide a better future for her children, and as the steadfast leader of her household, she emigrated to the United States. In those early days, she found support and encouragement from a Spanish “angel” she lovingly called Sister Carmen.

From the United States, Carmen continued her lifelong commitment to uplifting her family. Gradually, her siblings followed, she became a proud US Citizen creating new beginnings and raising future generations along a path she helped pave.

Carmen lived wholeheartedly for her family. She found immeasurable joy in becoming a grandmother to Pedro, Julian, Julius, Leomary and great grandmother to Jeremiah and Jayvian whom she loved deeply until her final day. She instilled in them strong values and a lasting message: never forget your Latino roots — remember where you come from and who you are.

Throughout her years, Carmen resided in Hartford, Wethersfield, Niantic, and Cromwell, Connecticut. Her favorite residence was Niantic where she lived many years by the shore with her Father, Luis and Grandson, Pedro.

She was organized, disciplined, attentive to detail, and purposeful in all she did. Above all, she sought to make those around her feel loved, supported, and cared for.

Carmen’s legacy is one of leadership, resilience, unconditional love, and devotion. Though she will be profoundly missed, the foundation she built and the family she strengthened will continue to honor her life for generations to come.

In Celebration of Our Queen, Carmen Meneses’ funeral services will be held on Friday February 20 from 10am -1pm at Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford, CT. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford, CT.

Si bien su partida deja un vacío inconmensurable en los corazones de quienes la amaron, su vida se presenta como un poderoso testimonio de fortaleza, sacrificio y devoción inquebrantable a la familia y a ayudar a otros que buscan una vida mejor.

Nació el 30 de junio de 1939 en la comunidad rural de Barragán, en Purificación, Tolima, Colombia. Fue hija de la ya fallecida Irene Montealegre y Luis Meneses Alcalá, y la querida hermana de Belarmina, Julio, Etelvina, Félix, Héctor, Marina y Eliecer.

Desde joven, Carmen demostró fortaleza y un espíritu protector. Atesoró los recuerdos simples de su infancia, especialmente disfrutar del pescado que su padre capturaba en el río Magdalena, momentos que arraigaron profundamente su amor por la familia y la herencia. En 1949, comenzó su educación en la Escuela Santa Lucía bajo la dirección de su profesora Rosa Evila Vanegas, donde se destacó en matemáticas.

Aun siendo niña, fue valiente y leal, defendiendo a sus primos Ofelia y Nieves en la escuela. Aunque no completó su educación formal, nunca dejó de aprender. La propia vida se convirtió en su mayor maestra, y llevó sus lecciones con sabiduría y resiliencia.

En busca de oportunidades, se mudó a Ibagué, donde conoció a Pedro Nel Gil, gerente de la empresa intermunicipal de buses Flota La Magdalena y padre de sus hijos, Sandra, Pedro y Eliana. La familia se trasladó más tarde a Bogotá y, eventualmente, a Medellín, donde establecieron su hogar durante muchos años. Allí, Carmen abrazó una de sus mayores misiones: abrir puertas para su familia. Uno a uno, ayudó a sus hermanos y hermanas a encontrar oportunidades en la “Ciudad de la Eterna Primavera”, donde construyeron sus hogares y criaron a sus familias.

Guiada por su determinación de brindar un futuro mejor a sus hijos y como la fuerte líder de su hogar, emigró a los Estados Unidos. En aquellos primeros días, encontró apoyo y aliento en un “ángel” española quien cariñosamente llamó Hermana Carmen.

Desde los Estados Unidos, Carmen continuó su compromiso de toda la vida para elevar a su familia. Poco a poco, sus hermanos la siguieron; se convirtió en una orgullosa ciudadana estadounidense, creando nuevos comienzos y criando a futuras generaciones en un camino que ella ayudó a allanar.

Carmen vivió con plenitud para su familia. Encontró una inmensa alegría en convertirse en abuela de Pedro, Julián, Julius, Leomary y bisabuela de Jeremiah y Jayvian, a quienes amó profundamente hasta su último día. Les inculcó valores fuertes y un mensaje duradero: nunca olviden sus raíces latinas — recuerden de dónde vienen y quiénes son.

A lo largo de los años, Carmen residió en Hartford, Wethersfield, Niantic y Cromwell, Connecticut. Su residencia favorita fue Niantic, donde vivió muchos años junto a su Padre, Luis, y su Nieto, Pedro.

Era organizada, disciplinada, atenta a los detalles y con un propósito claro en todo lo que hacía. Sobre todo, buscaba hacer que las personas a su alrededor se sintieran amadas, apoyadas y cuidada.

El legado de Carmen es de liderazgo, resiliencia, amor incondicional y devoción. Aunque su ausencia se sentirá profundamente, la base que construyó y la familia que fortaleció seguirán honrando su vida por generaciones.
