

Carol Alice Miles 92 of Broad Brook and Vernon passed away peacefully on Thursday March 31, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital with her loving family by her side. She was born January 5, 1919 in Arnold, Nebraska daughter of the late Walter Charles and Fern (McBride) Miles. Before moving to Connecticut she had resided in Scotts Mills, Oregon. She resided in East Windsor from 42’ to 63’, Hartford and Avon from 63’ to 05’ and then Vernon Manor Health Care Center from 05’ to 11’. Carol was a thirty year member of the United Methodist Church of Hartford, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She had worked for the State of CT in the Laboratory Department for twenty six years. Her interests and activities included Audubon, bible study, avid reader, writer of poetry and essays, lover of nature (especially birds) and her love of traveling (England, Ireland, Scotland, Greece, Italy, France and numerous States in the US)
She is survived by her three loving children Anthony B. Simmons and his wife Donna (Greenough) of Hebron, Mark J. Simmons and his wife Mary Ann (Hensel) of Broad Brook and daughter Sandra M. St. James of Vernon; her twelve grandchildren and their spouses Megan Morin and her husband Michael, Stephen Simmons and his wife Sarah, Emily Simmons and her fiancée Christopher Davis, Karen, David and Pamela Simmons, Erin Moody and her husband Walter, Robert Carroll and his wife Carrie, Jacqueline Futia and her husband Dominic, Nina Salazar and her husband Daniel, Geoffrey Goodale and his wife Louisa, and Caroline Dunlap and her husband Jonathan; and her fourteen great grandchildren Samuel, Erica and Rowan Moody, Joshua, Nicholas and Megan Carroll, Brianna and Dante Futia, Zoe and Anya Chatfield, Delilah Salazar, Nathan and Charles Dunlap, and Alyson Simmons. Along with both her parents she was predeceased by her former husband Bernard A. Simmons; a sister Goldie Kennedy; and three brothers William, Charles and Nelson Miles; and a great grandson Ian Moody.
Relatives and friends are invited on Tuesday (April 5th) at 9 am to the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford, followed by a 10 am funeral service with Rev. Terry Schmitt officiating. Burial will follow in St. Catherine Cemetery, Broad Brook. Calling hours will be Monday (April 4th) form 5-8 pm at the funeral home.
