Dorothy Louise (Fisher, Casella) Stanger, 89, life-long resident of Glastonbury passed away peacefully at St. Francis Hospital January 2, 2013. The daughter of Clair H. fisher and Charlotte Neuschler Fisher, she was born in Glastonbury on September 16, 1923.
She was the widow of the late Andrew A. Casella of Glastonbury and Frederick J. Stanger of Portland. She is survived by her daughter Karen Shea of Beverly, Massachusetts, her son Andrew R. Casella of Glastonbury, a granddaughter Carleen Casella and two great-grandchildren. She leaves a sister-in law, Emma Casella Dickenson of Florida and a brother-in-law Charles Casella of Texas and many nieces and nephews across the country, as well as, step-children and -grandchildren from her extended Stanger family. She has also left an army of cherished friends — young and old — who brought her joy and whom she supported with her love, wisdom and understanding.
Dot attended Glastonbury High School, graduating in 1941. While a young woman she worked as a secretary for several firms, and in the 1960s she joined her cousin who was founder of The Marlborough Country Barn, where she served as office manager for many years. Later she worked at and retired from the Portland Golf Course.
Dot was an avid gardener, at one time having 50 rose bushes in her yard. Her indoor gardening included a knack for growing orchids. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting…to the delight of many new babies. She was a gifted golfer and continued playing into her 70s. A two-time survivor of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, she was still vibrant and active until her recent hospitalization.
A graveside service is planned for Spring when she will be buried in the Green Cemetery. A Memorial to Dot will be held in her gardens when her flowers are in bloom.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested in Dorothy’s name to the Chronic Disease Fund who helped her save her sight from macular degeneration.
