Evelyn Lawson Roscoe, 95, passed away July 28 at Foreside Harbor, Falmouth, Maine. She was born July 16, 1915, in Medford, Massachusetts, the only child of Charles Lawson and Gladys Dinsmore Lawson. The family lived in Worcester and Winthrop, and then moved to Connecticut, where Evelyn graduated from East Hartford High School. She received an A.B. from Tufts University, and completed her Master’s Degree in Social Work at Simmons College in 1939. Before her children were born and after they were grown, she was a social worker for the Family Service Society in Connecticut, a psychiatric social worker for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, a social worker for the Connecticut State Welfare Department, and a supervisor for the Connecticut Department of Children and Youth Services. Over the years she volunteered in schools and community organizations, including the YWCA, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts. She was a faithful member and Life Deaconess of First Church of Christ Congregational in East Hartford, where she and Carlton P. Roscoe were married on November 10, 1940. They lived in the same house in East Hartford from 1941 until 2006, when they moved to The Arbors in Manchester. Evelyn moved to Maine following the death of her beloved Carlie after 68 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Judith Roscoe Macfarlane, in 2003. She is survived by her son, Charles H. Roscoe, and his wife Susan of Yarmouth, Maine; four grandchildren, Kelli Macfarlane Courtois and her husband Patrick of South Windsor, CT, Cheryl Macfarlane Spencer and her husband Brad of Glastonbury, CT, John Roscoe and Jennifer Minard of Sullivan, Maine and Steven Roscoe and Joy Woodworth of Dillon, Colorado. She leaves five great-granddaughters: Hayli, Haydin, and Huntyr Courtois and Lindsey and Courtney Spencer. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Robert S. Roscoe, of Mississippi; three nieces, Nancy Anderson, Janet Dinda, and Diane Langille; cousins Robert Dinsmore and Dorothy Dever; and many extended family members. Evelyn was loved and admired by all who knew her for her gentle and friendly nature, and her quiet intelligence. She never looked back with regret or worried about the future, but always gracefully accepted the here and now. She was devoted to her family, and tireless in the loving care she provided. Her family is profoundly grateful to the staff and administrators at The Arbors Independent Living Facility and Foreside Harbor for their professionalism, sensitivity and genuine affection for Evelyn.
A celebration of her life will be held on August 21 at 10 a.m. at the First Church of Christ Congregational, 837 Main Street, East Hartford, CT, 06108. Burial will follow in the family plot at Hillside Cemetery, East Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Evelyn’s memory to the First Church of Christ Congregational, East Hartford.
