Jacqueline Marie (Vespa) Carmicheal, 60 of Ellington, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 surrounded by her loving and devoted family. She was born in Hartford a daughter of the late Nicholas and Evalee (Taylor) Vespa. A graduate of East Hartford High School, Jacky worked as a court stenographer for the Ohio family court system early in life prior to returning to Connecticut and working as a Secretary at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, where she met her future husband, Ray. However, Jacky was first and foremost a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and sister; a cherished homemaker who will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Vernon. Jacky was devoted to her family, proud of her sons, and loved her granddaughters. She had a bright and positive outlook on life, outgoing and involved and was always smiling. She enjoyed the beach and watching the sun rise and set on the beaches in Ogunquit, Maine. Her dream was to live in a cottage on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Jacky enjoyed knitting blankets and sweaters for her grandchildren and was an avid reader. She is survived by her beloved husband Ray W. Carmicheal, three sons Tom and Jared of Ellington and Jesse of Vernon, her daughter-in-law Alexis, her brother John Vespa and his wife Louisa of New Britain, her treasured granddaughters Josephine and Evalee Carmicheal, her nephew Brian Ehlen, her niece Amelia (Vespa) DiPrete and husband Kevin and their daughter Kayla. Jacky was predeceased by her sister Cinda Ehlen and sister-in-law and dear friend since high school, Lynne Vespa. Funeral services will be Monday, March 24, 2014 at 11AM at the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Avenue, East Hartford. Visiting hours, at the funeral home, will be Sunday from 3-6PM and Monday from 10:30AM until the time of the service. Burial will be private. Jacky was a two time breast cancer survivor and therefore memorial contributions may be made to the Connecticut Affiliate of Susan G. Komen, 74 Batterson Park Road, Farmington, Connecticut 06032.

I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your dear wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. My sister and I grew up on Bliss Street, three houses down from Jacky and her family. We were childhood friends. I have so many fond memories of Jacky--playing dress-up, riding bikes to Woodland School, running through the sprinkler on hot July days. I remember her taking off with the neighbors across the street on summer days to P&F Pond (we couldn't go because you had to know an East Hartford policeman or fireman to swim there). I remember when Jacky, Johnny, and Cinda's “Popper” died (at least, that's how I recall her pronouncing her grandfather's name, probably due to her mom, Evalee's awesome Kentucky accent.) I remember hearing about her visits to family in Kentucky and her coming back with chigger bites, which she covered in pink nail polish as a cure, she said.
Some years later, Jacky and I found ourselves living back on Bliss Street for a time. Our boys rode their big wheels together and played matchbox cars.
I'm happy to see so many smiling pictures of Jacky. Her wedding picture is beautiful. She seems to have found happiness in this life. I'm sure her grandchildren were a special blessing. I have a Josephine, too. We call her Josie.
I wish all of her loved ones God's comfort and peace as you face the days ahead. May you always remember the love you shared.

We will treasure the memories we have of Jacky. The parties at your house, our house the kids house. Birthdays, anniversaries and even our wedding. So many happy times we shared watching the grandchildren play. All of our grandchildren called her grandma and we were glad to share them with such a wonderful lady. Love Steve and Penny Zuidema
