Lascell Augustus Hinds, also known as “Babes”, “Big One”, “Uncle”, and “Jubba”, sadly passed away on January 23, 2025, at Hartford Hospital after battling with kidney disease and undergoing dialysis treatments for a long time. He was a person of remarkable character and kindness. He had a way of making everyone feel special, whether through his warm smile, his generous spirit, or his unwavering support. He was born on September 18, 1948, at his parents’ home in Cockburn Pen, Kingston 11, Jamaica, and he was the last child for Leonard Hinds and Estella Francis-Hinds, who both predecease him. He also had nine brothers and two sisters, ten of whom predecease him. His only surviving sibling is Reginal Hinds, who lives in Jamaica.
Lascell’s childhood days were mostly like many others. He had fun as a little boy growing up in Cockburn Pen. He attended the Coburn Gardens All Age School and after completing ninth grade, he transferred to Halle Selassie High School. As a youngster growing in Jamaica, he was friendly and loved helping his brother, John, in his shoemaker shop after school.
He was later influenced by his brother and became a shoemaker as well. He took pride in his work and did a great job making the latest styles. The first shoe he made was a masterpiece! During that time in his life, he decided that he wanted more, so he bought a car and began to run a taxicab from Three Miles to Halfway Tree in Kingston, Jamaica. Although he was doing well, he wanted more for himself, so he opened his own bar, all the while selling clothes, shoes, and jewelry to customers and to higglers downtown. He was known as the “jack of all trades”.
During his young adult life, he started his wonderful family with Miss Lorna Silvera, aka Miss Lou, and became the stepfather of Donovan Bartley. They also had four handsome sons, Raymond, Nashue, Paul and Mark and two beautiful daughters, Joy and Cheryl. His children were his life, and he nurtured and cared for them the very best way he could.
In 1999, he migrated to the United States and lived in Connecticut for all those years. He worked at Walmart in Manchester for over fifteen years and retired seven years ago. He also had two ex-wives, Sonia Bryan and Lovern Gullope.
Lascell was the life of the party and enjoyed drinking his liquor and dancing. He was a very jovial person and loved giving everyone nicknames. He always enjoyed Miss Lorna's cooking; his favorite meals were steamed fish and crackers and brown-stewed chicken foot. She knew just how to prepare his meal, and he would enjoy it with a tall glass of carrot juice.
Just an insight into how funny he was: After the doctor stopped him from driving, one of his sons sold his car. Oh my, that was the worst thing he could have done. Determined to do whatever he wanted, Lascell went back and bought another car. His son went to the car dealer and told them that if anything happened to his dad, he would call the police on them. When Lascell heard this, he replied, "Call which police? It’s my money me a spend so you go to hell". Make no mistake, he always spoke his mind and lived life his way! Lascell was truly loved by his children who all cared for him in every possible way, and they stood by him until the very end.
He will be dearly missed and remembered by his family and friends. Left to mourn are his children: Lascelles Hinds (Nashue) and spouse, Donovan Bartley stepson, Paul Hinds and wife, Sebastian (Mark) Hinds, Joyce (Joy) Hinds, and husband, and Opal (Cheryl) Hinds. Brother, Reginal Hinds. Twenty grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
