Lt. Col. Ret. Leonard John Brushie Jr. 70, known as "Bud", longtime resident of East Hartford and beloved husband to Dawn L. (Evans) Brushie, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2010 at his residence. He was born July 5, 1940 in East Hartford son of the late Leonard J. and Edythe (Lundgren) Brushie Sr. He was raised in East Hartford, working for his dad as an attendant at their gas station and then graduating from Loomis Chaffee High School. He began working for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft before graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with his Chemical Engineering Degree. He pursued a lifelong career in the United States Army, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, serving during the Vietnam Era. During his career in the Army he received many degrees, one being a Masters in Business Administration and working in the Pentagon in Communications Intelligence. Along with his loving wife Dawn, he leaves his two children, a daughter Suzanne Turner and her husband Chris of Middlesex, England, and a son Christian Brushie of Chambersburg, PA: mother in law Lois H. Evans of Bristol: five grandchildren Lauren and Daniel Turner and Kazhmier, Selena and Leland J. Brushie: a sister Patricia LaSalle of Hartford: his former wife and friend Rowena Brushie and step daughters Courtney and Caitlin Kitt all of Middleburg, VA: good friends Bob and Ingaborg Chase of Manassas, VA and Raymond and Cathy Ogilvie of Warrenton, VA: along with numerous colleagues, friends and relatives. Along with being predeceased by both his parents was his in laws John R. and Margaret Dalby and George W. Evans. Family and friends are invited on Monday (September 27, 2010) at 9:30 a.m. to the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford, followed by an 11 a.m. Funeral Service with Rev. Gary Richards officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Veterans Memorial Field of Silver Lane Cemetery, East Hartford. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Leonard's honor to the VFW National Headquarters, Attn. Development Funds, 406 West 34th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64111.
