OBITUARY

Leroy Ellingwood

July 8, 1952 – September 18, 2025
Obituary of Leroy Ellingwood
IN THE CARE OF

Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home

Leroy Ellingwood, 73, passed away on September 18, 2025, in East Hartford, Connecticut. Born on July 8, 1952, in Bangor, Maine, Leroy lived a life defined by selflessness, dedication to family, and an unwavering worth ethic that carried him through to his final days.

Leroy was a man who made choices rooted in love and commitment. Early in life, he was presented with the opportunity to become a Professional Umpire - a dream for many - but he chose instead to start a family. That decision would come to define the legacy he built: one centered around devotion to his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his two sons, Jonathan Ellingwood (Stacie Meehan) and David Ellingwood (Tanya Ellingwood); and three grandsons - Declan Ellingwood, Rylan "Mookie" Ellingwood, and Noah Ellingwood - who brought immense joy into his life. He also leaves behind his devoted sister, Rosemarie Heal, who helped care for him and brought him that feeling of returning "home" which was always something he yearned for.

A tireless worker throughout his life, Leroy continued working up until his passing, his entire career spent in the fuel industry at Superior Propane and Kasden Fuel/Petro where he was loved and respected by so many of his peers and supervisors, many he called friends. His strong sense of responsibility and generosity touched everyone who knew him. He gave freely of himself without ever seeking recognition or reward.

Leroy's passions were as enduring as they were heartfelt. A lifelong fan of baseball and a devoted supporter of the Boston Red Sox he found joy in every pitch and play. He also followed UConn Women's Basketball with great enthusiasm; Men's Basketball became a more recent passion thanks to his grandson. Whether cheering from the stands or from his living room recliner with a cold Diet Coke in hand, sports were a constant source of connection and excitement for him.

Some of Leroy's happiest moments were spent at the beach riding waves and occasionally going to Red Sox games with his sons - simple pleasures that reflected the deep bond they shared. He also had a fondness for Western movies, which offered him both entertainment and escape.

Above all else, Leroy will be remembered as a generous soul who always put others before himself. His love for his family was boundless and unwavering. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and service as a lasting reminder of a life lived with purpose and heart.

In honor of his simplistic life Leroy requested no frills so there will be no formal services. Please remember him in your hearts the way he'd want you to.
