Mark L. Rivard, 60, of Ashford, passed away on November 12, 2019. He was born in Hartford, a son of the late Arthur K. Rivard Sr. and Patricia A. (Seiler) Rivard of East Hartford. He was a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for over 39 years and recently achieved his 1 Million Mile Recognition. He was a Communicant of St. Philip Church. Mark was a proud United States Marine stationed in Beirut, Lebanon during the bombing of the U.S. Embassy and attained the rank of Lance Corporal. He was a past Connecticut State Department Commander of the Disabled American Veterans and founding member of DAV Chapter 53 in the Quiet Corner. Mark was passionate about helping others, including veterans. His constant positivity was contagious, and he would always make the best out of every situation, no matter how difficult. Mark was family-oriented and worked hard to create a strong, loving, and supportive family. His talkative nature opened him up to many friendships, from all walks of life. If there was something Mark would want others to remember from his passing, it would be his saying, “Be a leader, not a follower.” He is survived by his beloved wife, Louise E. (Whitford) Rivard, his three loving daughters, Amanda Holden and her husband Matthew and Jacqueline Dettore and her husband Brian, all of Stafford Springs and Rachel Rivard of MA., two brothers Dr. Arthur K. Rivard Jr. and his wife Dr. Cherie Rivard of Danville, KY and Gerald Rivard of East Hartford, sister Denise Benavides and her husband Larry of Wauchula, FL, two treasured and adored grandchildren, Conner Jeffrey Holden and Logan Mark Holden and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday November 18, 2019 at 11AM at the Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Avenue, East Hartford, CT, followed by burial with military honors, in Rose Hill Cemetery, 580 Elm St., Rocky Hill, CT. Visiting hours at the funeral home are Sunday November 17, 2019 from 1PM-5PM and Monday from 10AM until the time of the service. Mark was a very giving guy who helped me out immensely with my DAV benefits upgrade. He was one of the nicest guys around always willing to help anybody out. And with a smile. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Louise and girls. Looking at these pictures shows how much of a true loving family man he was. Sincerely, Paul and Marilyn Brozyna & family

I met Rachel during the death of my sister-in-law. She helped Megan, her father Gary, and I with settling Megan’s mother’s home. I will forever hold in my memory this woman Rachel. Her actions told me a lot about the family she comes from. God Bless all of you. You are in my prayers. It is encouraging to know such a loving person as Rachel. Her father’s love is carried forward.

Words are insufficient. Please find comfort in knowing how much each of you are loved and cared for. Mark’s legacy is his selfless generosity and genuine caring for others. His ultimate love and dedication to you, Louise, and you Amanda, Jackie, Rachel, was always visible. When you added Matt and Brian to the family, Mark became a proud Father-in-law! When Conner and Logan came along... Mark’s life was complete! For a reason that is hard to understand, God needed him now. For this, I am deeply sorry. My heart hurts for you. I love you and I know that Mark is so very proud of your strength and your close knit family fabric.

I did not know Mark well but I knew his big smile at DAV functions! My heart goes out to his friends and family at his loss, but I know that big smile is lighting up the sky and making it brighter for our loved ones who have already passed.

Dear Louise & family: My deepest condolences to you all. I first knew Louise while still at St. Joseph's. And once you had daughters you followed your mother's footsteps into Girl Scouting. You couldn't have done all you did in Girl Scout Leadership and Teaching without a supportive Husband. Unfortunately, I never met Mark, although I knew of him. A special hug to Rachel - whom I got to know on an IB trip to China. May your fond and special memories of this amazing man help and support you at this difficult time. My sincere sympathy,
