Martina “Tina” Nicolette Miller of Hartford, Connecticut, transitioned on Wednesday, May 27th, at the age of 70. Born on November 9th, 1955, in Washington, D.C., Tina grew up surrounded by the love of her parents and six siblings.
A gifted student from an early age, Tina attended D.C. Public Schools for elementary and junior high school, where her academic excellence quickly became evident. In 1972, her achievements earned her an academic scholarship to St. Paul’s Preparatory School in Concord, New Hampshire. She excelled there as well, and her dedication and brilliance led her to become part of the first class of women admitted to the newly coeducational Harvard University. In 1978, Tina graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She later continued her education, earning a Master of Arts in Education from Saint Joseph College in West Hartford in 2009.
After college, Tina began a 25-year career at Connecticut General Life Insurance (now Cigna Group). She advanced through numerous roles—including analyst, programmer, trainer, supervisor, designer, manager, and director. She and her team were pioneers in the use of computer programs and algorithms to develop actuarial tables, contributing to innovations that shaped the industry. Following corporate reorganizations, Tina chose to pursue her true passion: teaching and supporting young learners. She spent many years tutoring students and adults in mathematics throughout the Connecticut school system. She also tutored students and adults in SAT and GED courses. Math came naturally to her, and she loved sharing that gift with others
Tina was actively involved in her church, Saint Christopher Church of North American Martyrs Parish. She was a lector and extra ordinary minister.
Family was at the center of Tina’s heart. She adored her nieces and nephews, showering them with love, surprises, and her signature “goody bags” whenever she visited. Holidays were made brighter by her thoughtful themed gifts and her joyful spirit.
Tina was preceded in death by her beloved parents, James and Eursaline Miller, and her brother, Jerome Miller.
She leaves to cherish her memory her siblings: James C. Miller, Wayne Miller (Donna Lee), Jayne Miller, Rosslyn Miller, and Robert Miller (Nicole); her nieces and nephews: Shayla Miller, Taurean Miller, Shanise Dames, Neshelle Fraser (Kenny), Sharina Miller, Shanicqua Miller, and Jasmine Boyd; her great-nephews Kentrel Holley and Kingston Fraser; her beloved cousin-sister Sherry Hill (Steve); her cherished aunts Margaret Carter and Gwendolyn Blue; along with many cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Tina’s wonderful friends, Nereida Diaz and Sandra Diana Toledano, for their unwavering kindness, love and support. A special thank-you is also given to Alicia Jones and Lee Watts for their dedication and support. The family is forever grateful and blessed.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial mass at St Christopher Church, 538 Brewer St, East Hartford CT 06118 on Thursday, July 2nd at 10:00 a.m. Visitation with the family will begin at 9:00 a.m.
A separate memorial service will also be held in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area at a later date.
