

She was born in Fitchburg, MA on February 10, 1920, daughter of the late Thomas and Jennie Ferguson Shiel. Millie spend her childhood years in Fitchburg, MA and her teenage years in Dayville, CT. She graduated from Killingly High School in 1938. Millie and John were married on June 20, 1942 in Norwich, CT, moving to Mayberry Village in East Hartford in 1946. Prior to her retirement Millie was employed as a secretary in the Construction and Maintenance Department of First National Stores for 23 years.
Millie was an active member of New Covenant United Methodist Church (formerly Burnside United Methodist Church) for over 64 years. She was a member of the Tuesday Bible Study, Sharing Group, and Women’s Society enjoying many wonderful years with the church ladies doing rummage sales and creating many delicious dinners for fund raising. She also volunteered many years at the Friendship Center Soup Kitchen in East Hartford. Millie and John enjoyed square dancing with the KC squares of East Hartford. She was a long time member of the South End Seniors and enjoyed playing bingo on Thursdays.
She was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Knitting and sewing for her grandchildren and great grandchildren was her greatest pleasure.
She leaves to mourn her passing her three loving children and their spouses Jean and Ernie Hutt of East Hartford, CT, David and Kathleen Proctor of Reading, MA and Thomas and Patricia Proctor of Villa Rica, GA; grandchildren Lisa Hutt, Caitlin and John Hartsfield, Christopher Proctor and Kyle Proctor; great grandchildren Brenna Hutt, Brooks and Rollins Hartsfield. Also, her loving extended family Kim, Steven, Seth, Gabi & Sam Pines; Kristin Hutt, Chase & Cole Hanson; Kevin Hutt; Kelly, Craig, Kian, Chloe, & Talia Hutt-Vater; Michael, Sara, Ava, Mikey & Ana Ekstrom; and Bill, Kelly Sam & Libby Lambert and LeeAnna & Mark Sweatt. She also leaves two sisters-in-law, Ruth Hodgson and Barbara Wheeler and many nieces and nephews.
Our family is especially grateful to our pastor, Gary Richards, who always found time to call and to visit Mom. Whether she was home or at a nursing facility, he would find her.
The family would also like to thank the caregivers at Glastonbury Health Care Center, especially Bibi, who took extra special care of our Mom.
Anyone able to attend calling hours or her funeral, please wear bright colors. Mom did not like black clothing.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 28, 2016 at New Covenant United Methodist Church, 16 Church Street, East Hartford with Rev. Gary Richards officiating. Her family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:30 to 11:00 am at the church. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, East Hartford. Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Avenue, East Hartford, CT 06108 is entrusted with her arrangements.
