Spencer, also known as Pepper to family, was born on October 17, 1944 in Hartford, son of the late Perry W. and Edith A. Pratt.
He attended the first 6th grade class at the” New” Buttonball School in 1955, attended Kingswood School in West Hartford and Salisbury School in Salisbury, CT. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1967 with a B.A. in political science and history. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, a close group of brothers who knew him as Bence. This amazing group of brothers and their spouses have continued to meet every summer for over 30 years to reminisce about the good ‘ole college days at UVM and share their life experiences since graduation.
Later, Spencer received a Masters of Professional Accounting in 1976 and M.B.A. in 1979, both from the University of Hartford.
He was a proud veteran having served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era, 1967-1969, with a rank of Captain, followed by his service in the U.S. Army Reserves.
For twenty years he was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford & Southington in the Product Support Dept. as an accountant. He then worked another 20 years as a tax auditor for the State of CT in the Dept. of Revenue Services in Hartford, retiring in 2009.
Spencer was a former sports official for the CT Board of softball, basketball and volleyball officials. He also coached his children’s sports teams when they were young.
He was a member of First Church of Christ, Congregational where he has been a regular Foodshare volunteer for the past 5 years.
For the past few years, he was treasurer for the CT National Guard Family Support Group in Windsor Locks. He was a major fundraiser for the Yellow Ribbon Campaign to benefit the families of the CT National Guard Foundation, Inc. during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
He was a NY Yankees fan at heart, also rooting for the Oregon State Beavers (claiming to be their only fan east of the Mississippi) as well as the UConn Women’s and Men’s basketball teams.
In addition to his wife Carol of 41 years (former Carol Thomas of Burlington, VT), he will be dearly missed by his daughter Christina (Michael) Needham of Wakefield, RI., son Steve (Sandra) Pratt of Middletown, CT, and grandchildren Riley, Max and Sophia, sister, Susan (Al) Phillips of Glastonbury, nephew Scott (Dydee) Soule, & their children Dylan and Tyler of Milford, niece Karen Soule and her children Kaitlyn and Kyle Doucette of E. Hartford, also an extended Philips family; sister-in-law Eleanor L. Thomas of S. Burlington, VT.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at 11am at the First Church of Christ Congregational, 2183 Main St., Glastonbury, CT 06033.
