Adele Maire Gagliardi, age 45 of Lansing, Michigan, passed away on Feb. 3, 2021. She was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada on March 14, 1975 to Patrick Gagliardi and Theila Bailey Gagliardi. She married Antonio A. San Martin, Jr. on August 9, 2014 at St. Florence Mission, Drummond Island, Michigan.
Adele and Tony made a fantastic team that was greater than their sum, in life, at home, in their careers, and across many adventures, challenges and travels. They loved adventure and were fortunate enough to travel to the Galapagos, Belize, Canada and many other places. Adele also cherished her trip to Ireland with her mom and the many “sister trips” with the four girls.
Adele was an attorney, working as the Administrator of the Office of Policy Development and Research within the US Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration - a senior executive service role that Adele achieved remarkably early in her career and the highest civil service designation that one can attain in Federal Government.
Accomplishments:
• Graduated: DeTour High School; Michigan State University, B.A.; Wayne State University Law School, J.D.
• Resided in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada while serving in an Executive exchange program between the U.S. Government and Canada for the Department of Labor.
• Selected for and completed the Senior Management in Government Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
• Directed the team that drafted rules to implement the Workplace Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 and was recognized by President Obama for her exemplary leadership.
• Appointed to the Senior Executive Service by President Obama.
Adele is survived by her loving husband, Antonio A. San Martin, Jr.; mother, Theila Bailey Gagliardi and Phil Perry; father, Patrick M. Gagliardi and Debra Gagliardi; grandfather, Dominick V. Gagliardi; very special aunt, Trudy V. Bailey; sisters, Lisa Jo Gagliardi (husband Jason C. Smith), Laura Gagliardi and Michelle Gagliardi; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Adele is also survived by a multitude of family, friends, and colleagues who are bettered because of their relationships with Adele, whether measured in days or decades. All who enjoyed being in her orbit will miss this shining and supporting star. Remember, “It’s Ok to think and talk about her all the time. There is endless good to talk about. She will help guide us through this loss.” And guide us in our future lives, as we build upon the foundation of our relationship with her and her example of selfless caring.
All of The Gagliardis and Baileys along with the San Martins and Zepedas, mourn the loss of this loving light of our lives. Geography had no bounds when it came to loving Adele.
Adele’s childhood home on Drummond Island was her favorite place to be, looking out at the bay and islands brought her great peace. As children, Adele and her sister, Lisa Jo, loved the community library at the Drummond Island Elementary School. They visited it often, in the summer, and regularly during the school year. Adele’s wish is to encourage your continued support of the Library and children’s literacy. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, please send donations in Adele’s name to the Drummond Island Library, c/o Laura Hintz, Library Mgr. DI Library, P.O. Box 202, Drummond Island, MI 49726.
