Al was born November 27, 1928 in Rockford, IL the son of Carl Martin Nordheden and Elna Maria (Levinsson) Nordheden.
He graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor’s degree in Floriculture and Master’s degree in Ornamental Horticulture. He married Angelene M. Mitchem on June 10, 1951. They had three children, Angelene Carla Tucker (Jim), John (Jack) Albert Nordheden (Holly) and Karen Jean Nordheden.
His wife Angie preceded him in death. Al had his own landscaping business in Champaign-Urbana IL from 1953-1966, worked for the Horticultural Society of New York, Michigan State University, and Oakland University. He was an author for the Time-Life Library on Gardening and did landscape designs for The World Trade Center. He married Geraldine Gardiner on May 24, 2003.
He is survived by his wife Geri, two of his children, Carla and Karen, his sister Rita Marie Nordheden, daughter in law Holly, brother in law Paul Bowers, grandchildren Charles Eric Tucker(Dannette) and Lauren Angelene Tucker, great-grandchildren Kaelie and John (Jack) Tucker and numerous nieces and nephews. He joyfully claimed Geri’s siblings, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Al enjoyed camping, fishing, sailing, gardening, and model trains. He will be missed by his family and friends, and his dog Danny Boy.
Services for Albert Nordheden will be at noon, Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, 1730 E Grand River Ave, East Lansing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana, Illinois at a later date.
