Allen Smith went to be with the Lord early on the morning of November 12, 2014.
He was born on October 9, 1935 to LuLu and Owen Smith in Stockbridge, MI. Al spent his childhood and high school years in Litchfield and Battle Creek. He attended Battle Creek Central High School and Ferris State College in Big Rapids, MI where he played football and studied Accounting.
While at Ferris Al met Romona Sue Worrell. They were married December 22, 1955 in Lansing. Upon graduation Al went into the Navy, attended Officers Candidate School and became an Officer in the United States Navy. While in the Navy Al and Romona lived in Oakland, CA and Brooklyn, NY. Their son Greg was born in Oakland and daughter Lesa was born in Brooklyn.
Al left the Navy and the family moved to Lansing, MI. He started his career as an Accountant with Oldsmobile where he stayed until retirement. He began his second career as a Financial Consultant with the Michigan Financial Group where he worked for several years until he retired for health reasons.
Al and Romona’s favorite times took place on Drummond Island in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The family vacationed there beginning in 1964. They vacationed with many close friends on Drummond each year. This eventually caused Al and Romona to build a home on the Island where they spent much of their time entertaining friends, their 3 grandchildren; Daeten Smith, Jamie Smith, Kellie Smith; and one great-grandchild, Nevaeh Smith. Al also enjoyed fishing, boating, working outside, and telling jokes and stories. Al made his final trip to the Island this past summer.
In the early 1970’s Al and Romona were led by the Lord to join East Lansing Trinity Church (now known as Trinity Church) and, as always, the Lord’s plan came together. The wonderful leadership, teaching, and people of the church led the Smith Family to become born again followers of Christ. The friendships and support of the people at Trinity Church have continued to this day.
Al is survived by Greg and Lesa, his grandchildren, and sister Betty. Al was preceded in death by Romona, his Father and Mother, brothers Roselle, Don, Ron, Russ, Marv, and his sister Pat.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Monday, November 17, 2014 at Trinity Church, 3355 Dunckel Rd., Lansing, MI with Funeral Services immediately following.
Donations may be made in Al’s memory to the American Diabetes Association, 300 Galleria Officentre, Ste. 111, Southfield, MI 48034; and, Burcham Hills Foundation, 2700 Burcham Drive, East Lansing, MI 48823.
