My most prominent memory of Andy is the three weeks I spent with he and Cheryl in Berlin in the 1990's. While Cheryl was at work, Andy and I would visit about three places of interest each day of the week.  We traveled by bus, by S-bahn and by U-bahn. He figured that we went on 125 pieces of public transportation  during those three weeks, visiting museums and historic places like the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, etc.  He was a wonderful tour guide!

Hi Andy,  I guess our friendship began when you and I served together on the board for the Berlin Historical Association when you were  President, and I was the secretary.   It was about this time of day you would call and check in regularly with the board members to discuss BHA business and to get to know us better!.     How did I even get on that board?   You asked me through Jill,  and I declined when she said you had another person  who was interested,    and I forgot about it.  But, lo  and behold,  when Bill and I attended the Annual General Meeting,  I casually asked somebody who would be the new secretary, there was a pause, and    eventually someone came over to me, ( probably Cheryl) who said,   "You know what, 'It's You' "!     Guess someone forgot to mention that rather important  piece of information to me before it was formally announced that evening to the entire membership!  And so began a lasting friendship for Bill and me with you and Cheryl.    Fortunately we all learned to communicate much better than that as we continued our escapades around the world together.    
 
I would be remiss not to mention our monthly board meetings in Steglitz  which I always looked forward to in spite of the fact that I had to take notes.   Eventually I began baking brownies to bring along to the crew, the best that Duncan Hines could produce in Germany.      By the way,  I  saw our treasurer Oliver just a couple of months ago, and he enthusiastically told someone, "She used to bring us brownies"!      Bill always drove me and came early to just be able to chat with you and Klaus and the other guys, and did the same thing afterward.  Anyway besides socializing and eating,  we found time to put together some great tours and lectures for our members,  and I am very happy to say that BHA  continues to fluorish  with Oliver and Jill still there  carrying on for you and "your  old team"  of  those two,  plus  Eve, Alfons,   Klaus, and me.         I guess our efforts were important in the development of this well-known international English-speaking organization in Berlin--the only other one I can think of which remains strong is the BIWC which you and Cheryl know so well.     It must be mentioned that we had one other valuable   but "unofficial" Board member who always stood at the gate on lecture evenings greeting members by name as they arrived and making them feel welcome.      I'm sorry that Cheryl's  greeting tradition has not continued because I am sure it was one of the reasons our membership grew so quickly.      
 
As for our phone conversations,   remember it was sometimes rather lonely and one felt a bit isolated at home (when Bill and Cheryl were off at work at JFK),    I heard lots of stories about your kids,  sister,  Cheryl's daughters and mother,   your hunting cabin,  Jim's Hardware,    and all the things  and people you were missing in Hazlett   When I finally got to meet Michelle, Jon,   Jennifer,  Tammy, and Laura and the rest of the family and friends last month, I felt as though I knew them so well already thanks to our phone conversations.     And they are all great,   just as you had said!   I can tell that they missed you a lot when you were in Berlin.   
 
I'll always remember one special BHA evening in the Officers' Club at Julius Leber Kaserne organized by Klaus.     It was the BHA Holiday party held in the Wintergarten of the club with large windows all around.  You had asked my fledgling  BIWC Chorale to entertain,  one of our first concerts,  and with much fear and trepidation we did so and closed the evening with "White Christmas" as the snow began to fall softly outside the windows.   I am forever grateful for your support and encouragement of my Chorale which sang together  for 5 years (even onTV)   until I left Berlin .  Your confidence in me meant a lot in the success of that group which was near and dear to my heart.  And you also quietly encouraged  our daughter Laura to reach out for an internship with Alfons at the Partnership of Parliament/State Legislative Leaders Foundation.      That fascinating job opened many doors for her as she worked with him leading delegations to the Ukraine, Stockholm, and throughout Germany.       
 
Andy,  while you have many legacies, in Berlin  none is more enduring  than the Berlin Historical Association, what was  a relatively new group which grew and developed under your guidance and leadership.   Your understanding of people and knowledge of Berlin and German history, combined with your tact, patience, and wisdom were skills and traits which sent BHA on its way to becoming the fine international club it is today.    Leading a multi-cultural board, with our own work styles and customs cannot have been an easy task.    As I am sure you knew all along,  this group was not only about history,  but  for newcomers to Berlin from many countries, it was a starting point in making contacts and friendships in  what to them  was a strange foreign city  
 
Well for now,  I will close and say, Bill and I miss you as do many of your old Berlin buddies.    We think of you and Klaus up there hangin' out and making plans for Prussian tours and having brunch together at the  Officers' Club .         
 
We'll continue our many traditions  with Cheryl combining antiquing,  travelling, eating "Bauernfruehstuecks" (when we can find them),    and drinking wine  until such time as we are all together once again!   
 
As Jon so aptly put it,   I know you are up there building  something or cruising on your boat.        Smooth sailing,  dear friend.

Dear Cheryl,
 
We well remember when we couldn't wait to meet the new man in your life. We were so thrilled after meeting Andy because we could see how truly happy you both were.  Since you and I have a friendship that dates back 60 years, it was great to see that our husbands had so many things in common, and subsequently became good friends as well.  The four of us have had many great times together.

We loved getting your wonderful yearly Christmas letters from Berlin, full of so many great travel stories.  Then when you returned to the states, Andy's storytelling skills really came into play.  We loved hearing about your adventures overseas and here in the states as well.  

We created many fond memories when we visited you in Michigan, and when you came here to Indiana.  Our homes were filled with laughter whenever we got together.  One of our favorite memories includes the time you and I rode home from Saugatuck/Douglas with Andy's newest antique purchase accompanying us in the back seat of your car (Andy was positive it would fit in the trunk!).  He was the proud new owner of a stuffed black bear (later given the name, "George").  The looks we got from other drivers were priceless.  I believe George still holds a place of honor at your antique booth.  There was also the time Andy enlisted Don to model his authentic Indian costume so he could have photos displaying it.  We laughed until we cried when Don tried so hard to depict a true warrior in the photos; never mind he is of German heritage, with light green eyes, light hair and pale skin!  The costume, however, was spectacular, and we're quite sure no one ever noticed the model.  :o)

There are many more memories we can't recount here, and we will forever treasure those times we shared with you and Andy.  He was a special guy, and we will miss his quick wit, and his fun and interesting stories.  Will be forever grateful too that he understood our special friendship and was happy to be a part of our marathon talking sprees that sometimes went into the wee hours of the night.  Again, we will cherish his memory and our times together.  

We want to mention too, how impressed we were with all of the dear friends and family members who spoke so fondly of Andy at his funeral service.  What a great testimony to a truly outstanding person's life.

Andy and I got to be friends in Berlin - a friendship which extended to the American midwest when he moved back to Michigan.  Our social and professional circles intersected, so we became acquainted through the JFK School (Cheryl) and the Berlin Historical Association (Carol). In a short time he was one of my best friends!  Along with Cheryl and Carol we spent many a weekend hunting for bargains in the flea markets of Berlin.  I knew nothing about antiques or old things, while Andy was an authentic expert.  He demonstrated manifest patience in explaining minor details about an old ceramic pipe, butter churns, bullet molds, nussknackers, and many more things.  In a sense he was an historian, since he knew about the details that surrounded all these interesting, no-longer seen anywhere treasures.  After a long day of searching in the snow or rain, we would find some out of the way restaurant, kneipe, or pub, where we would eat and drink and enjoy the ambiance of Berlin.  His stories were the best - I spent a lot more time listening than telling, hence I benefitted from these exchanges a lot more than he did.  I must say, I learned a lot from Andy about things and life in general. We even discussed politics from time-to-time!  
 
When I applied for tenure at JFK an evaluation team assessed my teaching during one of my physics classes.  Andy, as a former teacher, represented the US ambassador.  When the head of the team, the German Superintendent, expressed concern that as a retired Army colonel, I would be too strict and lack understanding of the students, Andy convinced him that he was wrong.  I'm not sure he was wrong, but Andy played an instrumental role in my receiving tenure.  O know that his effort on my part was made professionally and not purely out of friendship. 
 
One Thanksgiving we all traveled to Seiffen, the small Nussknacker town in the Erzgebirge mountains south of Dresden.  There was lots of snow, and when we endeavored to drive up the long, steep hill leading to our hotel, the roads were too slippery to go up, so we had to go down.  We ended up sliding down what we thought was a narrow street, but was probably a sidewalk.  As we slid down, the pathway, lined on both sides by high walls, it narrowed.  When we reached the bottom, Andy guided the car through the opening, only slightly larger that the vehicle, with skill (perhaps using his naultical maneuvering ability) and his typical calmness!  We stopped at one of the stores in town to call the hotel, and the owner closed his shop and drove us to the hotlel in his four wheel drive Audi!  Andy had gotten me interested in nutcracker collecting - of course his were renovated and beautiful, while mine were old and worn out.  When he and Cheryl visited us in Tacoma, they slept in the room where mine were displayed.  In the morning he complained about all the "bandit eyes" that were watching him and prevented him from sleeping - he suggested that he would put blindfolds on them for the next night, so he could sleep!  Many of you will recognize Andy's unique style of humor.
 
After Andy and Cheryl returned to Michigan, Carol and I would meet them in Columbus or Haslet for several days every summer.  I looked forward to resuming our talks and explorations.  I will miss the twinkle in his eye, the smile behind the beard, his steady demeaner - and his friendship, although, my guess is that he is up there looking out for me (and many more of his friends and family) from his perch at the Number One wood carver's bench!  Er war ein Mensch!!

When I think of Andy the first word that comes to my mind is storyteller.  One of my favorite memories of Andy took place last February when I took Mom over for a visit to Stuart, FL where Andy & Cheryl had docked Serendipit-Us for the winter.  We enjoyed a perfect weekend starting with getting mom on board with the special ramp Andy built just for her visit, to taking a 2 hour cruise along the St. Lucie River.  Saturday night was "Pot Luck Night" for the marina residents.  The four of us sat in rocking chairs overlooking the water as we ate our dinner and Andy told us many stories of their adventures traveling down the IW to Stuart.  As he entertained us with stories, the sun was setting on a beautiful, warm sunny day. Words cannot explain what a peaceful and enjoyable time we had that evening and all weekend in their company. Andy will be missed by all the people whose lives he touched.  I am fortunate to be one of those special people.

Cheryl, I will always remember Andy's sense of humor, his quiet and easy- going manner in the memories I have of both of you when we met in Berlin--how he and I never could master the German language, how he transformed the American Berlin Historical Society--bringing it back to life with new programs, speakers, field trips and presentations with his efficient organizational skills.
Andy was always fun to be with--our trip to Kenya during one Christmas vacation and all the weekend travels Tom and I did with both of you ending in 2003 with our 3 weeks traveling across Eastern Europe by car--blazing unknown roads and areas off the beaten track.   Andy and I doing the driving while you and Tom did the map work!!  What an adventurous team we were!!
One of my special and lasting memories of Andy is of him always reaching for your hand, saying this is m wife and I want her next to me and away the two of you would go hand in hand!  He truly loved and cherished you and never hesitated to show that.  What a gift of love the two of you shared and it will last through eternity.
Andy was a brave warrior dealing with his cancer these last years --always positive and living life to the fullest despite his pain and suffering.   Thinking of you and your families during this time of loss knowing you will always be surrounded by Andy's love and the beautiful memories you have shared together.

Cheryl, I was so sorry to hear of Andy’s passing.  It’s hard to believe we lived less than twenty miles from each other for decades and didn’t meet until I moved to Germany.  I will always hold those three years dearly in my heart.  What a lucky person I am to have gotten to be a friend with such a wonderful, intelligent and adventurous man as our Andy.  My prayers are with you today and alway as he continues to wander through our thoughts, warm our hearts and stand close in spirit.  I am honored to join in the celebration of a wonderful life lived as only Andy could live it.

Dear Cheryl,

I am so sorry to hear the sad news regarding Andy’s death.  I never had the opportunity to get to know him. Mutual friends always spoke so highly of him and of the two of you as a couple that I feel as if I have known him.   Please know that I am one of your many friends thinking of you.   

I hope the many wonderful years you and Andy had together give you many happy memories so you can sometimes smile through the tears as you continue to grieve.   May you find some peace through the warmth and support of your family and friends.

Dear Sheryl and family,
it was very sad to hear that Andy has crossed the bridge to another world but at the same time comforting to hear that you Sheryl and his daughter were with him to hold his hands.
What comes back to my mind, when I think of Andy, are very fond memories of the times we shared in Berlin. Our BHA board meetings and discussions, several lectures and events that we all went to.
And working together at a refreshment stand out at Tegel on July 4th one time.
Also riding home on the U-Bahn chatting and laughing. Andy, I'm sure, was a person who enjoyed life very much and as such he will be remembered.

Cheryl, I've been at many funerals over the years.  Rarely if ever have I seen so many people WANT to offer eulogies that a line begins to form!  Andy touched a lot of lives over the years, mine included.  I'm just surprised that he and I never found any mischef to join in together. I think I would have liked that a lot.

Andy bestowed a great honor on me when he asked me to be his best man in his wedding to Cheryl.  This was a great match - they both had very similar interests and passions.  When Cheryl might tend to be excitable Andy was always calm and this helped Cheryl through many of her worst panics.  One of those panics was in the form of a $^&@! poem she had composed and wanted me to recite during their wedding ceremony.  Cheryl's panic was well founded because I for the life of me couldn't commit the poem to memory as she wished.  Andy, in his well known nature said, in private and away from Cheryl, "Jim, don't worry, it will all turn out okay."  And it did turn out okay as they went on to have a wonderful marriage and life together.
Even though I wasn't able to do the things I enjoyed with Andy like sailing and hunting in the last many years, I did and will always think of him as a man I was very glad and privileged to have known. I feel I'll see him again.

Andy's passing  has brought a mix of emotions. On the one hand, I am so sad to think that I will not be able to be with his strong, fun personality. On the other side, I am happy that he is at peace. I like to think that Mike, Ray and Ben came to greet him.

I also remember Andy's knowledge and talant to make impossible structural changes in my house when I was told by others it couldn't be done. It came out perfect and made a house become my home. The fun times and hard work durring boat launch with Andy and his sleeping bag tucked tightly into my tiny cubby hole of a "sleeping loft" at Mystic Village. What a pleasure to have shared so little in a life so abundantly full.

Thoughts of Andy makes us smile.  We remember when Cheryl and Andy first got together, even though they had taught in the same school for some time!  It was instant and precious connection for them.  And we were so fortunate to be able to be a part of their lives together.

The four of us have shared:
  *happy sailing times aboard SV Spica - love those champagne waffles 
      and even washing/waxing/bottom painting-can you believe that?
  *ski trips with Jug and Mug - parties and impromptu snowball fights!
  *Spica/Maritime sailing along with SV No Problem to many Lake Michigan                 
       and North Channel ports - some â€œweather bonding experiences!â€
  *joyous holiday gatherings - fun in the sauna!
  *the support of each other in the loss of our dear friend, Denny.
  *the fun of your visits to our home in Charlevoix - going antique shopping!
  *the pleasure of a week visiting you in Berlin - our wonderful tour guide 
       and President of the Berlin Historical Society, Andy!
  *the adventure of a three week tour of England, Wales and Scotland - 
       enjoying the sites, B and Bâ€s and pubs!

  And through these experiences, Andy always shines in his welcoming spirit, love of history and information, real appreciation of family and friends, deep and abiding love of Cheryl and his â€œspecial witâ€ and wisdom, which he readily shared with us.  He touched our lives for over a quarter of a century in ways that our dear friend, Andy, only could do.  We will miss being with him and he lives forever in our hearts.

Thanks for everything Mr. Highstreet.   I remember working on on your spindles for your quilt project, sanded all semester on that lathe.  Best project I ever worked on in the shop, probably one of my fondest memories of Haslett High. Thanks again for the memories.

I was privileged to spend time with Andy and Cheryl for 5 of their 6 years in Berlin.  I often think of Andy when I look at the sewing machine table top he made me.  I will never forget him driving us around Morocco in the car we got with absolutely no gas and returned with absolutely no gas.  The goats in trees and on scooters were great as was the scooter guy who followed us all the way into town to have us come to his shop.

I've just read Pat's (Arlig) email with the sad news about Andy Highstreet.  I had heard from Carol Kunzman that he was ill, but I was shocked to hear of his death.  I'd really appreciate it if you could pass our condolences on to Cheryl. We didn't know them that well, but they were a big part of Berlin life through BHA and BIWC.

What fun we've had together since we met in Berlin! I'll never forget Andy's willingness to escort me to his favorite troedelmarkts and sorting through stuff looking for treasures. Memories of meals at Oma Brink, visiting in Knoxville and Haslett, and reading your adventures aboard your "little" trawler are some of the great riches you and Andy brought to our lives. Thank you to you both.

...a hammer, a sail, a travelogue, a devoted partner to share life with and a loving family to come home to;  the years you spent shaping young minds and their visions;  your creating and building for practical use with such artistic details;  your epitomizing our vision of "the old man and the sea", navigating past hidden shoals and enjoying seascaped sunsets;  your exploring and learning the history and culture of countries far better than many of their natives;  your foraging through dusty attics and shops, finding old treasures along the way;  your ability to subtley pull Cheryl's chain and humorously handle the yank back;  your seemingly effortless fit into the craziness of the Kleinert clan.
We will miss your quiet, unassuming presense.

Barbara and I met Andy and Cheryl at the Sunset Bay Marina during February and March of 2010. We remember Andy and Cheryl trying to teach us Mexican Dominoes/Trash Train. This game became one of our favorites. We will remember Andy each time we play. At the marina, we enjoyed many meals together with our cruising friends(see photo). We treasure our many get togethers. Didn’t want that time to end.
Although we knew him for a short time, he left a lasting impression.
Andy will be missed.

The trials Andy and Cheryl endured with their 43 Albin were (eventually!) met with a smile and positive attitude.  Boats, and life, bite you at times but also bring great joy.  As a marina neighbor, project consultant, and friend, Andy was a plus in my life as I am sure he was in others.  He was loved, there is no finer legacy.

Andy, I think we share the belief of heaven being a place where all our hopes are answered.  A place where all the channels are deep enough to never scrape the keel, and where all that is needed to finish a job is on hand.  A prefect place of unlimited bounty that allows us to continue our interests and to work as we did on earth, unencumbered by frustrations.  My sense of loss is offset by the thoughts of you working happily in your new shop, sailing on perfect waters and sitting with your friends in a warm duck blind.
