Age 84, passed away on July 15, 2016, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI. He was born on November 6, 1931, in Lansing, MI to Lauretta (Bluem) and Arthur H. Rice, Sr. Arthur had a distinguished academic and professional career. He attended CMU and was named Chippewa of the year when he graduated in 1953. He then obtained his Masters in Journalism from Northwestern University in 1957. Arthur served in the Army from 1954-56 and was the Editor of the Ft. Eustis Sentinel in Virginia. He later obtained his Ph.D. in Education from MSU in 1964. Arthur was a Professor at CMU from 1957-58 and then worked for the MEA from 1958-89. He was the Editor of the Michigan Education Journal from 1958-69 and then for the Teacher’s Voice from 1969-75; both of which received numerous awards during those years. While at the MEA he held many Executive positions, including Chief Assistant to the MEA Executive Director. He was very proud of the work he did at the MEA and the gains he achieved for teachers.
After retirement he volunteered for numerous organizations, including the Cardiac Rehab at Sparrow Hospital. He was an avid music fan, especially classical, and loved to travel with family and friends. He loved his Detroit Tigers and MSU Spartans and was very involved in politics throughout his life. Arthur was an extremely caring and loving man with a gentle soul, who always had time to talk and spend time with anyone.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Genevieve (married June 18, 1956 in Evanston, IL). He is survived by his four children: Laurie, Maureen, Andrew and Matthew; his two siblings: Florence and Terry; 8 grandchildren; and numerous friends that he would all consider his family.
There will be a visitation at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home in East Lansing on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 from 4-8pm. The funeral will be at the Haslett Community Church on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 10:30am. His family and friends will miss this good man dearly.
In lieu of flowers, Arthur would prefer donations to the American Cancer Society, 1755 Abbey Road, East Lansing, MI 48823.
