

Mr. Miller, a native of Port Clinton, Ohio, and a graduate of Ohio University, was retired from Michigan State University as an associate professor emeritus of journalism. Following his retirement, he taught for several years in MSU's Evening College program.
Prior to his career in academe, Mr. Miller was an editor at several newspapers, including the Detroit News, the Milwaukee Journal, the Buffalo Courier Express, the Dayton Journal Herald and the Painesville (Ohio) Telegraph.
Mr. Miller was a U.S. Army combat veteran of World War II. He was wounded in Germany as an infantryman with the 29th Division when he was just 18. Later in life, he returned to Germany multiple times where he maintained close ties and friends.
He was the author of two books, "Copy Editing: Making Good Writing Better," and "Veteran Returns to a Battlefield," a memoir of his military experience. Mr. Miller also worked as a publishing consultant on eight other books. He loved classical music, baseball and public affairs.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Julie Miller. He is survived by his son, author and journalist Steve Miller (Andrea Billups), and his longtime caretakers Jamie Pollitt and Julie Shaffer-Fuller.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at 11:00am at the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan.
