Catherine L. Anderson, 100, of East Lansing (since 2010) and formerly of St. Clair Shores and Grosse Pointe Woods, MI (since 1940’s), passed away peacefully on November 21, 2015. She was born April 1, 1915, in Chippewa Falls, WI, to Lars and Nancy (Moe) Anderson, one of eight children.
Catherine was employed in various jobs since she graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in 1933. In the late 40’s, early 50’s, she worked for the Army as a civilian for 2 years in Japan and 3 years in Germany; which lead her interest in traveling the world throughout her life time into her 80’s. After 33 years working for General Electric Company, Carboloy Division, she retired in 1978. She was a member of the Nomads (travel club), Quilters Guild, and was a volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital in Detroit.
Catherine had many special and close friends in the Grosse Pointe Woods and St. Clair Shores area where she lived the majority of her life and had a great fondness for. In 2010, she moved to East Lansing to be closer to her family.
Catherine was a world traveler and artist. Catherine was always up for any adventure. She obtained a pilot’s license when she was in her 50’s. She would take one class after another until her 90’s; from the various arts to technology. Until the morning she went to Heaven to be with our Lord and Savior, she kept up with the times, politics, world news, trends, fashion, and all the changes and inventions during her 100 years . Catherine loved sewing, quilting , decoupage, oil painting, silversmith/jewelry making, needlework, avid reader, and loved working cross word puzzles daily. She was a season ticket holder to the Fisher Theatre in Detroit for many years. Catherine loved her Norwegian heritage and excited to meet her new found family, who still live in Norway, when they came to the U.S.A. to visit her several years ago.
While she never married or had any children of her own, she was like a grandmother to her great nieces and nephew, great great nieces and nephews and great great great nieces. The last 5 years Catherine enjoyed going North to the lake house and the off the grid cabin. She adapted to any place or environment, always so happy and full of life.
While she will be greatly missed, we all like to think of her exploring a new world in the Heaven above with the same enthusiasm she had exploring this one. She was such a blessing!
She was preceded in death by her parents and her seven siblings.
She is lovingly remembered by her great-nieces and great-nephew, Vicki Durr Marinez (John) Rigney, Scott (April) Schoen, Wendy (Jack) Davis, and Roni King, and their families.
According to her wishes, services will be private.
