Charles Sherman Steele, age 72, formerly of Camp Hill, PA, passed away March 7, 2011 in East Lansing. Born in Lewistown, PA he was the son of the late Charles W. and Lucy Binet Steele. Charles graduated from the former West Shore High School in Lemoyne, PA. He was an Eagle Scout. Charles received his undergraduate, Masters and Doctorate degrees from Pennsylvania State University. He and his wife lived on Kyushu, Japan for a year. There, in Arita, he studied ceramics and porcelain and was apprenticed to a master potter who is now a National Treasure. He was a Professor of Art at Michigan State University from which he retired in 2000.
Charles is survived by his wife of 50 years, JoAnn Steele; sister, Jane Steele Morgan of Camp Hill, PA; sister-in-law, Jane Allen; brother-in-law, George B. Harry, both of Leesburg, FL and many special nieces and nephews and their children. He and his wife loved their Brittany Spaniel dogs and competed in many field trials in the Midwest.
