Charmaine Marie Riggs

September 1, 1961June 25, 2020

Charmaine Marie Riggs, age 58, passed away peacefully on Thursday June 25, 2020 in her home, surrounded by loved ones. She was born September 1, 1961 in Lansing Michigan to Travis and Beverly (Stofford) Reeder.

Charmaine grew up in Bath, Michigan with a close-knit group of family and friends, and was a 1979 graduate of Bath High School. She married her high school sweetheart Ralph Riggs on January 11, 1980 in the midst of one of the worst winter storms they had experienced. Nothing could stop Ralph and Char from starting their next adventure together. They celebrated 40 years of love and marriage this year. Ralph and Char raised two beautiful children with more love and generosity than you can imagine. Her family was Char’s proudest accomplishment, including her two beautiful grandchildren that she adored, Mason and Skylar. But family to Char was far reaching, included her extended family and many beloved friends. All who knew Char knew of her love for her family, and love for the time they spent every year camping at Silver Lake.

After serving people for many years as a bartender at Red Lobster, Char went back to school in her 40’s to serve people in a different way. She graduated from Lansing Community College Nursing Program and became a registered nurse in 2008. Char truly enjoyed nursing, and most recently cared for patients in their own homes, advocating and educating them so that they might live the best version of their lives possible.

Char was a diehard Michigan State fan.

Char was intentional in living her life to the fullest and cherished her friends and family. She would do anything for those in her life, but what really exemplifies Char is that she would do anything for a stranger.

Char was preceded in death by her mother, Beverly Jean Reeder; and brother, Jerry (Charlene) Roberts. Surviving to cherish her memory is husband, Ralph; son, Chad (Jennifer) Riggs; daughter, Amy (Amanda) Kelly-Riggs; grand children, Skylar Grace Kelly-Riggs, Mason Curtis Kelly-Riggs; father, Travis Lee Reeder; brother, Travis (Tammie) Reeder; and sister, Shanon (William) Redr-Van Ostran.

There wasn’t a room that Char could not light up by just being in it. I was fortunate to work and experience Silver Lake with her. My fondest memory is of her and Ralph. Always holding hands and in love. Char you will be missed by so many! May you be at peace and see you on the other side.

In the late 1980's while attending law school in Lansing, far from home, sad, and feeling abandoned, as well as very lonely, I was granted the greatest gift ever known to an overweight, introverted and awkward young nerd, which was to be befriended by the two most beautiful and wonderful souls that ever existed in this world, Char and Rhonda! Both of whom I learned to love as my own sisters, and I know learned to love me as their own protective brother. Furthermore, their husbands and families accepted me as one of the family, something that I will never, ever, forget! I love them, all. Char brought such laughter and light into my otherwise dull life. Her presence wàs a guiding light with her joy, humor, off color jokes, and constant bright outlook on life. The girl could make fun of anything!! Her humor knew no bounds or limits!! Thank God!! She made ALL of us such better PEOPLE!! I love her, and will miss knowing her spirit is no longer amongst us on this troubled Earth; yet, I am pleased to announce to the world her spirit is now amongst us and our ancestors in the heavens, at peace.

Char was part of our gang - Nursing School, graduation 2008!!! Study Group!!!! Started our first full-time nursing gig together - on the same day! She and I were even born the same day! I will miss her and hope her family takes solace in knowing she loved them with her whole heart. You will be missed, Char. Your shift is over for now.

I’m so sorry for your lost.
The last time I saw Char was at Sears’s, she gave me the biggest hug and for a few seconds I thought I was in my mother’s arms, (we are close in age) that’s how she made you feel and that’s how she loved. Such an amazing woman.

I can still hear your voice from behind the backstop cheering for Amy, yelling to make sure I keep everything in front of me. From 7th grade on, you were one of our biggest supporters. Amy and I were a team, pitcher and catcher and hella-good hitters, for 7 years. You never missed a game, made sure we were together at our year-round Sunday trainings, and you always had our backs when a call was unfair. 🤣🤣🤣. You were one of my HS moms. 💜 YOU were the person I talked to and contacted about going back to school for nursing later in life. You made me believe I could do it.. I still have those messages. Maybe someday I will go back. Live on through your babies and grandbabies, Char. They need you now more than ever.
