Clayton Bud John Henry Metz

October 11, 1931April 27, 2013

Metz, Clayton John Henry (Bud), son of the late Clayton H. Metz and Jeannette Werner Metz and brother of Dudley B. Metz, passed away on April 27, 2013. He was a native of Chicago, Il and a resident of Okemos, MI. Mr. Metz is survived by his greatest friend Edwina, his French Bulldog, who inherited his aristocratic air, wife Carol A. Metz, son Kurt W. (Gina) Metz, daughter Karen E. (David) Thimmig, stepdaughter Martha (David) Wizgird, his grandchildren Allison, Edward, Samuel, Maxwell, Emma and Richard Clayton as well as many nieces and nephews.

He served as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was President of Metz, Lecy, Barnes & Thias Insurance Agency in Lansing and active in the insurance industry as a member of the National Board of Agents Advisors of the New Hampshire Insurance Company, also President of the Lansing Association of Insurance Agents. He served as Chairman of the Board of America One Insurance, as Justice of the Peace in Delta Township of Eaton County and acted as State Chairman of the IYC Golf Tournament. After retiring, he wrote a biography of his great grandfather Alexander Simplot, who was a noted Civil War artist.

Bud enjoyed traveling the world, loved the finest foods, was a golf enthusiast, winner of the green jacket at the Country Club of Lansing, yachtsman, pilot, historian and ancestral researcher. He enjoyed the sights each morning at Dunkin’ Donuts in Okemos and his routine luncheon conversations with friends at Coral Gables Restaurant.

Words cannot express how empty our lives have become. His family and friends have lost a great humor, a true friend, a protector of animals and a first class humanitarian. Our memories of him will continue to influence our lives. He will live in our hearts through the generations to come, they will leave their mark as his ancestors before him.

Services will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, MI on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be on held on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. In lieu of flowers or contributions, offerings can be made to Mission of Our Lady of Angels (in honor of his mother), 3808 W. Dear Carol, my thoughts are with you and the family. I have so many fond memories of you and Bud visiting over the years. Take care

I'm sure that none of Bud's family or friends know who I am. My name is Peter and I have been married to Sherry Peterson/Mull for thirty plus years. In the past ten years Bud would call from time to talk with Sherry. If she wasn't home Bud and I would talk. I grew up without a father and over the years I began to feel like Bud was the father I never had. He would talk with me about my life, politics and life in general. Several years ago I met Bud in person on a trip to Lansing. We hit it off right away. We were even dressed alike. I will miss our talks greatly. Bud was a special person but I don't think he knew how much he meant to me. To his family and please except my sympathy from a stranger who was touched by Bud's kindness. Peter Miller

Carol, your dear husband will be missed by all at the Okemos Kroger. His sarcastic, obnoxious attitude made it worth going to work. I so enjoyed his jokes and military stories. He's left a hole not soon to be filled.

Dear Carol and Martha, so sorry to hear of Bud's passing. We always enjoyed his knowledge and his unique sence of humor. A man of many convictions. We loved him dearly.

We were so sorry to hear of Bud's passing, but jealous that he is now getting to meet our famous ancestors! He was always so excited when he found another link to royalty! After years of telephone conversations, I thank God that He gave us such quality time last summer. Bud's genealogy work is a treasured legacy - likely only a small part of the mark he left on many lives. He will always be in our prayers and I look forward to him introducing me to Henry VIII and Charlemagne one day!! God bless you all at this difficult time.
