Daren Lee DeVries
August 29, 1979 – October 30, 2019
Daren DeVries passed away on Wednesday, October, 30, 2019 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Born August 20, 1979 in Muskegon, Michigan, Daren was a graduate of Okemos High School and completed coursework at Lansing Community college. His education was interrupted after being the number one draft pick in Junior Hockey.
An exceptionally gifted athlete from an early age, Daren played a variety of sports but excelled in hockey and soccer. More than once in his amateur hockey career he scored a hat trick (three goals in a game) in a single shift. His hockey prowess allowed him to play for the Metro Chiefs of the North American Hockey League and ultimately for the Belle River Canadians in the Provincial Junior Hockey League in Belle River, Ontario, Canada…a team that produced numerous NHL players.
After hockey he worked in insurance, mortgage financing and other marketing opportunities. In 2011 he sustained a traumatic brain injury and other injuries from an auto accident. He ultimately passed away from these injuries.
Daren was preceded in death by his mother, Cindy DeVries; and grandparents, Thomas and Mary DeVries and Ellenore Childers.
He is survived by his father, Tom DeVries; grandfather, Lee Childers (Fruitport, MI); brothers, Chad (Lansing, MI) and Derek (Grand Rapids, MI); and sisters, Jennifer (South Carolina) and Amie (Leslie, MI).
His humor, loyalty, love for animals and devotion to family and friends will be missed but always remembered.
There will be a private family service.
The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, East Chapel, East Lansing.
Condolences may be shared at www.greastlansing.com

I am so sorry for the loss of Daren. I remember being in middle school and meeting Daren and Chad while hanging out at the Nemoke Trails pool. We all became fast friends and then continued to remain friends through teen nights in high school and then our shared love of electronic music. Daren had an amazing sense of humor and gave the best hugs. I haven’t been in the area for a while now but whenever I ran into him when back to visit it was like no time had passed. He will be truly missed.
