

He was born in Milwaukee, WI on June 29th, 1940, to Ervin and Esther (Kossak) Blair. David grew up in towns along the upper Mississippi, graduating high school in Fulton, IL and earning his PhD in mathematics from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1966. He joined the faculty at Michigan State University in 1967 and remained there until his retirement in 2004.
Dr. Blair enjoyed a distinguished career as an internationally-renowned scholar, presenting his research around the world, specializing in Differential Geometry. Highlights of his work include authoring three books, a Fulbright Scholarship, and the J.S. Frame Award for Distinguished Teaching. He was very highly regarded as a first-class colleague and teacher at MSU.
In addition to his scholarly pursuits, Dr. Blair was an accomplished pianist, playing most of his adult life. A private student of Deborah Moriarty, he enjoyed giving recitals in his home. He passed along his love of music and mathematics to his children, both of whom enjoy professional careers in these areas.
David was a faithful member of The Peoples Church of East Lansing and sang in their choir for 50+ years. He met his wife, Rebecca (Adams), at the church in 1972. As a choir member, he enjoyed singing the role of Balthazar in the annual Three Kings pageant. He was an avid traveler, visiting over fifteen countries in his career, including with his family. He particularly enjoyed having the chance to live in France, England, and Belgium. He was a kind, dedicated, and supportive husband, father, and grandfather.
David was preceded in death by his parents, sister Pauline Pike, and nephew James Pike. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Rebecca, daughter Marie of East Lansing, MI, son Matthew, daughter-in-law Amalia and granddaughter Cora, of Albuquerque, NM, and dog Emma. He is also survived by his brother-in-law George Pike Jr, niece Elizabeth (Pike) Martin and nephew George Pike III.
