Age 85, passed away December 23, 2013 in East Lansing, MI. Donald was born June 17, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY to Jonas H. and Genevieve (Kane) Ottens. Donald received his Jesuit High School education at Brooklyn Preparatory in New York City and received his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. He served in the US Army in Italy, post WWII; constructed expressways in New York City and relocated to Lansing in the 1960’s to raise his sons. Donald designed roads and bridges for the State of Michigan. He was a devout Roman Catholic and long-time parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Genevieve Printon and brother, Theodore Ottens. Surviving is his beautiful wife, Elena Ottens, whom he met at a Catholic Club in Manhattan, NY, and sons, Donald, Jr. and Peter. Also surviving is his sister, Patricia Baum.
A funeral mass will be held Monday, December 30, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 955 Alton Road, East Lansing, with Rev. James W. Lothamer officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Lansing. The family will receive friends for visitation 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Contributions may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in memory of Donald.
