Don will be remembered with deep respect as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose steady presence anchored the lives of those who knew and loved him. A family man in the fullest sense, he gave his time and care generously, and his loyalty to home and loved ones remained constant throughout his life.
Over more than four decades at Michigan State University, Don served as a professor and extension specialist, bringing thoughtful expertise and a commitment to teaching that shaped countless students and colleagues. His love of mentorship also found expression beyond the classroom—as a basketball coach, track coach, and member of the Spanish Club—offering encouragement, guidance, and camaraderie in every setting.
Don also founded Clearview Orchards in Haslett, Michigan, a lasting reflection of his dedication and vision. He took special pride in supporting Michigan State University and Oregon State University, the institutions that were his alma mater, and he remained a faithful friend to all, known for the quiet decency and respect he extended to others.
Don is survived by his spouse, Joanne Ricks, of 58 years; his children, Mark Ricks (Renee) and Craig Ricks (Kelly); his grandchildren, Parker Ricks, Carson Ricks, Addison Ricks, Eislinn Ricks, and Mila Ricks; his brother, David Ricks (Lynn); and his sister, Mary Haas (Dick), brother in law, Rich Burr, Dave Burr (Lori), and sister in law Dianne Peterson (Dan).
