Dorothy died peacefully Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at the age of 89 following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born February 9, 1926 in Lapeer MI the daughter of Ruth (Campbell) and John Beattie Sr. She graduated from Lapeer High School in 1944 and earned her RN license from Henry Ford School of Nursing in 1947.
She was a practicing nurse in the Lansing area for several years, working at the MSU Olin Health Center and later for the private practice of Dr’s Cordes & Neiberg. Her love of nursing reflected her caring personality and desire to always lend a helping hand. In the winter it would not be unusual to find Dorothy helping her neighbors shovel their sidewalks, often before her own. She inherited her strong work ethic from her parents while growing up on the family farm. She enjoyed her retirement traveling, attending Spartan football and hockey as well as spending time with her family.
She was a loving wife to her husband Kerr for 60 years as well as a wonderful sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, and her brother John, “Bub” (Maxine) Beattie. Surviving are her sister, Marjorie (Jack) Fernee, brother Edwin (Kathleen) Beattie; children Steve (Trudy) Stewart, Elaine (Richard) Noake, Charlotte (Mike) Dugas and Tom (Missy) Stewart, grandchildren, Stephenie, Kerri, Susan, Kelly, Kacie, Micheal and Sarah and great grandchildren Mackenzie, Ashton, Ava, Lilly, Tucker and Treva.
Her family offers a heartfelt thank you to all of her wonderful caregivers at Burcham Hills for the many years that she was part of their family. Also thank you to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan for their end of life care.
Her children welcome visitation Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 12:00pm – 2:00pm at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 East Grand River Ave. East Lansing MI. There will be a private family service.
