Durwood graduated from Sexton High School in 1946 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Michigan State University in 1950. They married at the MSU Chapel, beginning a partnership that spanned nearly seven decades.

He was also admired for his sharp sense of style and his love of reading newspapers. Durwood was a member of the Okemos Community Church, where he found fellowship and faith.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Hilda Hawkins; their children: John Hawkins, Heather (Craig) Murray, and David (Billie) Hawkins; his brother Loid Hawkins; and thirteen cherished grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Duane and Dorothy Hawkins, and his brother Dale Hawkins.
