

Edith was born on September 6, 1922 in Onarga, IL and died on March 22, 2012 at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey Glen and Anna Estella (Perkinson) Ireland; her brother, Herbert Orin Ireland; sister-in-law, Mary (Austin) Ireland, and nephew, Orin L. Ireland. She is survived by her nieces, Marin (Joe) Mattingly and Jeanne (Mark) Weiss; cousin, Cara (Randy) Robison; lifetime friend Virginia Thorpe; 7 great nieces and nephews and 3 great-great nephews and a great-great niece.
Edith received her B.A. from Illinois State University and her Master’s degree from Michigan State University. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse and the Onarga grade school before moving to Michigan in 1947 to teach in the East Lansing School District. She was asked to join the MSU Elementary Intern Program in 1967 sharing her wisdom with those new to teaching, mentoring for about 15 years. Edith was a beloved teacher and became a lifelong friend to many of the students she educated.
Edith was also a world traveler and photographer. In addition to her travels around the U.S., including Alaska and white water rafting the Grand Canyon, she visited Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe. Edith enjoyed sharing her experiences through travelogues presented to various organizations throughout the East Lansing area. Edith also enjoyed bowling, golf, bridge, reading and entertaining. She was an active member of The Peoples Church in East Lansing.
Funeral services will be held at Knapp Funeral Home, 115 West Seminary
Onarga, IL 60955 on Thursday, March 29, 2012 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 28 from 5 – 8 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at The Peoples Church, East Lansing, MI on Thursday, April 12, 2012 11:00 a.m.
