Ed served as a firefighter in the United States Air force from 1956 through 1960 reaching the rank of Airman Second Class. He was a long time Member of the American Legion Post 269, in Haslett Michigan and served on the Executive Committee. He was awarded Legionnaire of the Year in 2011 and was instrumental in renaming the post to honor Army Captain Steven W. Frank, Haslett Grad, 1994. Captain Frank, a close family friend, lost his life in Iraq.
Ed started a career in construction in the mid 1960’s as a Construction Craft Laborer and member of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA). In 1974 he was hired as the Director of the Michigan Laborers Training Fund. Ed was charged with developing and building the new Michigan Laborers’ Training Institute as well as design and/or approve class curriculum. Ed excelled in his position, overseeing the training of thousands of skilled trades construction workers over his 24-year employment with the organization. Ed was a 50+ year member of LIUNA.
Ed McDonald is survived by his wife of 56 years Sandra McDonald, Daughter D. Rene Chaffin, Son Scott Howard McDonald (Carmen), Son Matthew Edwin McDonald (Eryn), seven Grandchildren- Samantha, Dillon, Allison, Jordyn, Sophia, Avery and Charlie Mae, ten Great Grandchildren- Brianna, Jaxton, Liam, Elijah, Parker, Griffin, Jaslynn, Jayda, Jayci, Jamisyn, Ed’s 11th great Grandchild (Roman) is due on July 2nd, Two Sisters, Betty Visger (Bob, deceased), Sandy Blais (Rick), and two Sisters in Law Marilyn LaVere (Marvin), and Kay Kendall (Richard, deceased).
