Elaine “Deb” Rose (Ozimac) LaPine

So few knew her real first name but many knew her for her gentle heart. Deb died at home with her loving family on July 7, 2018. She was born on January 21, 1953 in Escanaba, Michigan to Frank and Anna Ozimac; she was the youngest of ten children.

She married Peter LaPine at St. Thomas Church in Escanaba on February 12, 1977 and they shared their lives together for over 41 years.

She is survived by her husband, Peter, and their treasured daughter, Lauren Elizabeth. Also, by her brothers, Ken of Escanaba, MI, Robert of Manistee, MI, her sister, Mary of Macomb, MI., and by many wonderful nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by several siblings: Joseph, Tom, Don, Melvin, Margaret, and Jeanne.

Deb was a graduate of Ferris State College and she earned a graduate degree from Michigan State University. Although she enjoyed several levels of responsibilities while employed by the State of Michigan, she was most pleased by her accomplishments as the Deputy Director of Workforce Development for the Department of Labor and Economic Growth. She was a devoted mother who found her joy in her own family or with larger gatherings with her own siblings or Peter’s. She enjoyed gardening, Spartan sports, reading, time with friends, and “just putzing” in her kitchen.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 13, 2018, 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 955 Alton Road, East Lansing with Fr. Mark Inglot officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Dr. Vaibhav Sahai at the University of Michigan Cancer Center for his compassionate care and professional expertise. Deb loved flowers but in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Rosary Altar Society at St Thomas Aquinas Church in East Lansing, MI or to the University of Michigan with Vaibhav Sahai Fund in the memo line. Donations to the Sahai research fund can be mailed to Amanda Smith, 1000 Oakbrook Dr., Suite 100, Ann Arbor, MI 48104.

Peter and Lauren:
Deb was the best boss and person I ever worked with thru my 42 years of employment with the state. She was a consummate professional. Better yet she was a wonderful person to know and have as a friend. We always talked about our daughters. Boy, does she love both you guys. Peter, you know that Deb and I had much fun sharing , many, many "Dumb Blond" jokes.

Know that GOD has relieved her of all earthly problems to be by HIS side in HEAVEN. Praise the LORD for sharing her with us.

My heart goes out to you and Lauren at this very sad time. I know from the stories you have shared, you three were quite the trio! If there is any comfort in knowing what a gentle and supportive example you and your family have been as you faced Deb's illness, as a trio, know that you are a testament to many. May God grant you all peace and comfort. I will keep you close in prayer, and am here for you in any way I can be of support.
Warmly, Kristin Hicks

I really enjoyed working with Deb with SOM. I worked with the MRS ergonomics program and we coordinated services. She really cared about employees and it was always fun to meet with her.

Our deepest condolences to you and your family. Deb was a great boss and mentor to me. Through her leadership, dedication, commitment, integrity, and genuine concern for others, she taught me how to be a better manager and person. I feel very lucky and fortunate that our paths crossed in this world as Deb was one of the best individuals I have ever met. I will always remember her for kindness, her smile, her wonderful laugh, and being a loyal, avid Spartan fan!
Our deepest sympathies,
Dale and Adel Beachnau

My Dearest Peter,

It is with great sorrow to see that Deb has lost her battle . She fought against her disease for such a long time and so gallantly! You have my love and understanding .

You never left her side but continued to support her in her fight through the war she fought against a condition that I had so hoped
She would win.

Grief is difficult but it is possible to work your way through it with time. I found that to be true after many tearful days and nights.
Hopefully the key to cure this vicious disease will be discovered very soon so other families will not have to deal with the suffering it gives to them.

Much love,

As you know I lost my dear Norm from the same disease. It makes one hope that some day this terrible affliction will be conquered
And none of those we love will ever have to go through what you two have experienced!
