Born in Flint, Michigan, she was the only child of Earl and Lillian King, who both worked at General Motors. As an only child, she spent summers with her cousins in Ontario, Canada, and Nashville, Tennessee. She graduated from Flint Central High School and attended Albion College. While at college, she met the love of her life, Dick (Richard B.) Campbell. They married in 1950, and moved to Frankfort, Michigan, a place they loved. Dick was the band director and Elaine worked with the drama department at the Frankfort High School. After one year in Frankfort, Dick was notified of an impending draft into the Army. He chose to enlist in the Air Force, and the young couple moved to Texas for four years. Elaine worked as a secretary at an insurance company and in a department store during those years.
After the service, Frankfort was no longer an option, so they moved to the Flint area. They raised their three children, David, Lisa and John in Grand Blanc. Both Dick and Elaine worked for Grand Blanc Schools and owned businesses in the area – Campbell Keyboard and later Flight Tech at Bishop Airport. The Campbells took ski trips and flew on family vacations in their own plane. They belonged to the First Congregational Church of Grand Blanc and were active in Boy Scout Troop 368.
Upon retirement from Grand Blanc Schools, Dick and Elaine returned to Frankfort. Dick passed away in 1990, and Elaine remained in Frankfort for many years, being active in the Frankfort Congregational Church. In 2006, Elaine moved to Marsh Point in Haslett, Michigan, to be closer to family. She enjoyed attending all the grandchildren’s activities. Elaine was an active volunteer throughout her life, from preschool president, Girl Scout leader and Women’s Club president. She chaired the Silver Tea at her church in Frankfort for many years and served on the welcome committee at Marsh Pointe. Elaine moved to The Willows of East Lansing, Michigan, in October of 2017.
Elaine is survived by son David W. Campbell of Haslett, his wife Sherry Jean (Koontz) Campbell, and their children, Nathan D. Campbell, Quincy C. Campbell, Caitlyn J. Laidler and William S. Campbell; daughter Lisa A. Sanburn and husband Daniel R. Sanburn of Stuart, Florida, and their children, Nicole L. (Sanburn) Cavanagh her husband Charles A. Cavanagh, Michael B. Sanburn, James A.
