It is with great sadness and profound sorrow that we mourn the passing of our beloved sister-in-law, Elaine L. Fink, on Thursday, August 1, 2019. Elaine was the “true farmer” in her family, and she would rather be outside in her prolific vegetable gardens or caring for her prized goats in the barns than anyplace else on earth. She possessed more factual information about goats than anyone we knew, and she shared it with enthusiasm and true expertise!
Elaine was renowned for her hand-made goat cheeses. Her skill in this ancient craft would have put any French “fromagerie” to shame! Any visitor stopping by would be treated to a platter of several kinds of goat cheese accompanied by just the right cracker to bring out the flavor of the cheese.
The proverbial “earth mother,” Elaine had great respect for the earth, the environment, alternative energy, organic foods, climate change, and sustainable living. A voracious reader, she had an ethereal and admirable understanding of politics and how her fellow man is affected by the divisive tactics of 2019. Elaine was distraught by the lack of civility, humility, kindness and caring for kindred human beings which seems to permeate our culture today.
How Elaine loved her new “granny house” next to the farm! Her bedroom window faced the goat barn and yards for a reason, and her living room windows looked out to the vast expanse of farmland beyond.
It was both timely and fortuitous that we were able to spend a couple days in June with Elaine, Eric and Nancy, and grandchildren Brian and (Austin) Sarah, Sarah and Mike, and their respective young children in Michigan. These beautiful children (Elaine’s great-grands) were so active, running around in gleeful and cooperative play together. Elaine glowed with pride, and these precious memories will remain with us forever.
Rest in peace Elaine, and may God comfort your family.

Our condolences to Elaine's family. We remember Elaine giving us a tour of her gardens and extensive animal areas 12 or 13 years ago. The goats were the highlights! She also visited our Torch Lake cottage 12 or so years ago and was thrilled to go swimming in the lake. It held many happy memories for her. She provided an amazing ox-tail soup lunch for our family before my sister's retirement party from MSU in the early 2000s. Finally, her rapid recovery from her two hip replacements provided inspiration to another family member dreading his own surgery. (Remember the video of her dancing just days after her surgeries!) Although these are small and scattered memories, they emphasize what a caring and inspiritional lady she was. We were privileged to know her. Rosalyn and Ted Culver
