Our dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on August 25th, 2021 peacefully, with her children at her bedside. Eleanor was born May 21st, 1924 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Ross and Gladys (Hutchison) Belyea. When she was very young, her family, including her beloved brother Bud, emigrated from Canada to the United States. They lived in Detroit, Atlanta, and upstate New York before settling in East Lansing where Eleanor graduated from East Lansing H. S. in 1941 and Michigan State College with a degree in accounting in 1945. It was at MSC that Ellie met her best friends for life - her Delta Zeta sorority sisters. “The Girls” would get together for lunch frequently in subsequent years even into their eighties! On September 16th, 1950, Eleanor married Richard W. (Dick) Stubbs, a marriage that would last 60 years until Dick’s passing in 2011. The early years of their marriage were spent at Fort Riley, Kansas, when Dick was recalled for the Korean War, before moving to East Lansing where they raised their children Rick and Beth. Walnut Hills Country Club was a center of family activity for many years where Ellie served as ladies’ golf chairman as well as being a fine golfer and bowler. She was also a long-time member of Eastern Star, East Lansing Women’s Club, MSU President’s Club and Peoples Church. During the 1970’s, Eleanor became the office manager for the Michigan Oil and Gas Association where she worked for ten years. In later years, her great joy was her grandchildren. As all four lived in East Lansing lots of fun time was spent with “Nana”! As the kids grew up, she never missed a game, match, meet or performance. She was so very proud of their academic and athletic achievements and that they all grew to be such good people. Her goal was to live to see them all graduate from college…and she did!
Eleanor loved sports and was a devout Spartan as well as an “adopted”Arizona Wildcat fan.
She always put the needs and wishes of others ahead of her own, and did so joyfully. We will so miss her laughter, great spirit and optimistic nature. If you knew her you loved her.
Eleanor is survived by her son, Richard W. Stubbs, Jr. (Mary) of Cadillac, MI and daughter Elizabeth A. McGaw (Dorn) of East Lansing, MI; grandchildren Perry Stubbs (Sharon) of Festus, MO, Bonnie Keefer (Bruce) of Phoenix, AZ, Kaylei Aleksov (Kris) of Boston, MA, and Darby McGaw of Chicago, IL; great-grandchildren Hadley Stubbs, Brucie Keefer, and Kaladin Aleksov. Also surviving are nieces and nephews including Allen R. Belyea (Karlene) of Okemos, MI.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Richard W. (Dick) Stubbs, her brother Ross (Bud) Belyea, Jr. and sister-in-law Shirley Belyea.
We want to thank those at Stoneleigh Residence/ Hospice of Lansing for their tender care in her final days as well as those caregivers at the Willows of East Lansing who showed particular caring for our mother.
If you wish to do so, you may make a donation to Stoneleigh Residence in Eleanor’s name.
“Go now in peace, in faith, and in love.” We will miss you so.
