Ethelwynne "Wynne" Gibson

East Lansing, Michigan

Wynne, age 96, passed peacefully on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 to join her husband and son. She was born in Chazy, NY, August 3, 1915, the first of five children born to Stanley and Gladys North. She graduated from Chazy High School in 1932, then attended Cornell University where she met a handsome upperclassman, Duane L. Gibson. They were married May 15, 1936. They moved to East Lansing in 1938 where Duane taught at Michigan State College. In 1941 they welcomed their first son, Duane Jr.

The family lived in Alexandria, VA, during World War II, then moved back to East Lansing after the war ended. The birth of John in 1949 completed the family.

The family traveled during summer vacations and, after the boys left home, they continued traveling, including many trips to Florida and one spectacular trip to Scotland, accompanied by Duane’s sister, Dorothy, and her husband, Howard Hanna.

She was a member of League of Women Voters and thoroughly enjoyed working at Liebermans in E. Lansing for 10 years. She also enjoyed her work at the Lansing Art Gallery.

Preceding her in death was her sister, Dorothy; brother Jack; husband Duane Sr. in 1995; and son Duane Jr. in 2011. Surviving are her son, John; sister, Betty Gonyo; brother, Stanley North; and daughter-in-law, Nancy Gibson. Also surviving are grandsons, Michael Gibson, Allan (Dawnn) Gibson; and John’s son, Nathaniel Hanson; granddaughter, Jessica (David) Middaugh: eight great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Burcham Hills for the care she received for the past eight years. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 25 at 2:30 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Lansing, MI, with Rev. Wesley Emerson officiating.
