OBITUARY

Eun Sook Shim

July 26, 1927November 19, 2021

Eun Sook Shim was a caring mother, grandmother, and friend. She left this world on November 19, 2021 at age 94 in Okemos, Michigan.

She was born to Eui Chul Shim and Young Chang Lee on July 26, 1927, in Incheon, South Korea. After graduating from BakMoon High School in Incheon Korea, she continued her studies and graduated from the Teachers College of Seoul National University in 1947. She taught biology at Seoul National University High School and married a young politician, the late Honorable Byung Han Yoon, a member of the National Assembly in 1952.

She was one of those few women educated up to college at that time in Korea. However, her life was not always easy. She experienced two wars and a military coup. During military dictatorship, her husband was arrested and sentenced to death for political reasons. He was released after U.S. President John F. Kennedy pressured the South Korean military dictator. He had faced severe persecution under the surveillance from KCIA. She had to support her family without her husband’s help, taking the lowest jobs available due to persecution. Her hardship continued until she moved to the USA in 1984.

She is survived by two sons, Jee Won Yoon and Peter Sngwon Yoon as well as 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

She loved reading the Bible and praying. She enjoyed fellowship with her church friends. She took care of her grandchildren while her son and daughter-in-law were involved in mission work for many years.

Finally, she was in the arms of Jesus, her true lover.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 24 at 10 a.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Chapel, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing. The family will receive friends beginning at 9 a.m.

Burial will follow at East Lawn Memory Gardens in Okemos.
