East Lansing
Born in Columbus, Ohio, to George and Mildred Anderson, passed away on September 7, 2013, at the age of 88. He enlisted in the army at 19 and served during World War II as a medic in France and Germany. After the war, he remained in France for an extra year, working as a translator for the army and studying at The University of Besancon.
Returning home, he completed his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University and a Masters in Public Health at The University of Michigan. He devoted his career to public health, including thirteen years as Director of Laboratories and four years as Chief, Bureau of Infectious Disease Control, both at the Michigan Department of Public Health. After retirement he consulted as a Due Diligence Coordinator for the Michigan Biologic Products Task force. He was an active member of several organizations, including the APHL, the Michigan Rabies Workgroup, The Michigan State University Biomedical Research Review Task force, and The University of Michigan Public Health Consortium Committee.
Dr. Anderson was a member of Edgewood United Church for over 50 years. He was an avid reader, golfer, watch collector, and model train enthusiast. In his leisure time, he was most commonly found with his wife and a dog at his side.
He was well respected and well loved by his colleagues and his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Donna Sterrett Anderson; by daughters and sons-in-law Jill and Thomas Schaberg, Valerie and Michael Raymond; by granddaughters and grandsons-in-law Anna and Brian Paterson, Margaret and Ryan Walder; by a grandson, Nicholas Raymond; and by a newborn great-granddaughter, Grace Paterson.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 21, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at Edgewood United Church, 469 N. Hagadorn Road, East Lansing. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
