Morrie was born September 2, 1930, in Boise, Idaho to Morrison and Leona Hickman. He is predeceased by his parents and his sons Gordon and Mike. He married Marrian Hickman on January 15, 1977. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, his daughter Paula Howard, grandson Matthew (Kierstyn) Howard, granddaughter Kailee (Tom) Walters, brother-in-law Don Carmody and sister-in-law Connie Sutton, both of South Carolina, and son Marc and his family in Utah and California. He is a graduate of both BYU and Wayne State University. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He worked for the State of Michigan for 40+ years as an administrator for the Department of Community Health.
Morrie was a man of many hobbies and passions. Even if something wasn’t broke, it still needed fixing. He was a lifelong aviation enthusiast who earned his pilot’s license and owned his own Cessna, which he used to court the love of his life, Marrian. He was also an avid photographer and was always well known for having a camera (or two!) around his neck. The neighborhood was always aware of his presence as he drove around in his beloved bright yellow Nissan T-Top convertible while blasting “Hooked on Classics” for all to hear. As a lover of all things sweet, it wasn’t uncommon for Morrie to order a second ice cream cone before anyone else had finished their first. He was also known for finishing strawberry shakes in record time without any sign of a brain freeze. Lastly, he loved golf, but golf didn’t love him. He is one of a select few to strike a ball into his own leg. There is also a chance that some of his clubs that he repeatedly left behind are still out on a fairway or green somewhere. His smile, laugh, love for his family, and genuine curiosity for the world will be greatly missed.
Per Morrie’s wishes, no services will be held. Contributions in his memory can be made to Ele’s Place- Capital Region or to the Kalamazoo Air Zoo Restoration Center; please forward donations to Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home – East Lansing, 1730 E. Grand River Avenue, East Lansing, Michigan 48823, so donations can be acknowledged by the Hickman family.
