James “Jim” Hagan lived a full and inspiring life. He passed away peacefully on Monday, March 2nd, surrounded by loved ones. Jim is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary Anne (Neilson) Hagan. Together, Jim and Mary Anne raised two children, Michael (Matheus Belo) and Courtney (1995-2019). They also co-raised three sons from Jim‘s marriage to Jill (Shoemaker) Hagan; Matt (Heather), Brian (Courtney), and Kevin (Kellie). Jim was a proud grandfather to Zoe, Lexi, Austin, Carter, Jackson, Bentley, Callie, Gemma, Khloe and Kamden. He is also survived by his brother Bill and his sisters, Kay Batterson, Gail Ingle and Ann Strickland.
Jim was born in Lansing, Michigan and grew up on Gunson St. in East Lansing. He attended East Lansing High School, graduating with honors in 1965. He will always be remembered as “Golden Toe” for kicking the winning field goal that secured the mythical state championship for ELHS in 1964. This team would go on to be inducted into the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame.
Jim devoted his life to his family, his work, and his community. A true “local”, he started a business in East Lansing in 1969, which remains a family business today. Jim was a dedicated leader who always led by example; never afraid to get his own hands dirty. His values have left a lasting impression on his children, grandchildren, and many employees over the years.
Jim loved to play sports with his kids, including soccer, basketball and softball. He also enjoyed handball, golf, pickle ball, and riding his bike along the river trail; often carrying brown bag lunches to deliver to those in need. Jim loved doing anything that helped him stay in shape, remaining active right until the end of his life. When he wasn’t playing, he was watching; rarely missing a sporting event his kids or grandkids were involved in.
Jim will always be remembered for his deep love for his family, his honesty, generosity, integrity, humility, hard work and his devotion to his community. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Marcy Carrigan, Betsy, Jackie and Caroline, as well as the many others who have helped care for Jim.
A celebration of Jim‘s life will be held on Friday, April 17th from 4-7 PM at the Country Club of Lansing, 2200 Moores River Drive, Lansing, MI 48911.
Guests are encouraged to bring a written memory to place in our memory box for the family to read later.
