Obituary of James Michael Lucas
IN THE CARE OF

Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes

James Michael Lucas, 51, passed away on February 11, 2025, after a short battle with cancer. A man of many passions and curiosity, Jim’s life was a celebration of learning, discovery, and shared experiences.

Born with a love for knowledge and a heart full of adventure, Jim never stopped exploring. He found joy in the world of Legos, amassing thousands of pieces and hundreds of models and sets. His love for collecting extended to comic books, where he fell in love with superheroes and discovered that even the most ordinary person, could be a superhero.

Jim was one of those superheroes. As an educator, Jim was always in motion, constantly seeking new ways to share his passions with others. He began his journey at Michigan State University in 1991 as an undergraduate student, and his dedication to the institution never wavered. He transitioned seamlessly from student to faculty to administration, spending years shaping the lives of countless students and serving as a mentor. Jim was recently named the Senior Associate Dean in the Associate Provost Office for Undergraduate Education, a role that allowed him to leave a mark on the university and incoming students. As Assistant Dean of Global Education and Curriculum, Jim’s work focused on gender equity in education, sustainability and environmental studies, reflecting his deep commitment to a better, more conscious world.

Jim’s love for travel was limitless. Whether scoping out destinations for student trips or exploring the world with his partner, Abby, Jim’s journeys were always rich with experiences and are reflected in an impressive collection of art!

His students were fortunate to see the world through his eyes, as he introduced them to the beauty and depth of different cultures, preparing them for their lives beyond college and bringing with them an understanding of the global landscape.

A sharp, quick-witted guy with a brilliant mind and a wonderful sense of humor, Jim’s personality shone in every conversation and interaction. He had a gift for making people feel seen and valued, and his leadership style always centered on knowledge, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility.

He is survived by his partner, Abby Rubley; his father, Jim (Debbie) Lucas; his step-father Bob Neumaier; his brother, Joseph Lucas, his godsons, Nickolas De Ceuninck, Jakob Neisler, and Jack Pary; his best friend of 43 years, Kevin (Adriane) De Ceuninck; his beloved cat, Finnigan; Abby’s dear family from Montague; and countless friends, family, and colleagues who were lucky enough to have known him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon Neumaier.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 17 at the Michigan State University Student Union. Additional information will be shared in the coming weeks.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family to benefit a scholarship fund in Jim's name. Donations may be made to Abby Rubley and sent to 223 North Hayford, Lansing, MI 48912.
