

It is with tremendous sadness and even greater affection that his family announces the passing of Dr. James Everett Seaton, Sr, a devoted teacher, husband, father, brother, and friend to many. He was a generous, humble, and good-humored man
James Everett Seaton, Sr. was born in the Czech community of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1944 to John Everett Seaton and Amelia Frances Kopecky.
He received a BA from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in Comparative Literature with a major in Greek and Latin and minor in 17th Century French and English. In 1971 he joined MSU’s Humanities Department, where he taught the classics, philosophy, architecture, and literature. From 1980 until his passing, he was a professor in the Department of English; a compassionate man, he deeply enjoyed working with students. After a valiant battle with cancer, James Seaton died at the age of 72, on March 29, 2017. He played tennis until this past winter and taught into this March.
James Seaton is survived by his wife of 50 years Sandra Cecelia Seaton and their four children: Dr. Ann Louish Seaton, James Everett Seaton, Jr., Amanda Cecelia Webster Seaton, and Jeremy Evans Francis Seaton. Other survivors include his brother, William Francis Seaton, sister Mary Frances Wallner, step brother Dr. Carl Robson, step sisters, Vivian K. Harris, Lynne Trine, Jean Gregory and a host of devoted nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.
Dr. Seaton has written four books and published over 100 articles. His most recent book is Literary Criticism from Plato to Post Modernism: The Humanistic Alternative, Cambridge University Press. He is a regular contributor to The Weekly Standard, and his essays and reviews have also appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The Hudson Review, Yale Journal of Law and Humanities, Modern Age, and The University Bookman.
A funeral service will be held at 12pm on April 8, 2017 at University United Methodist Church, 1120 S Harrison Rd, East Lansing, MI 48823, with a visitation from 10:30 am to 12pm.
