James “Jim” Viventi, son of Dena and Richard, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. His battle with Parkinson’s showed his courage in facing life’s challenges, with unending strength, patience, resilience, kindness, and grace.
Jim graduated Catholic Central High School in 1965, received a B.A. in Sociology from Notre Dame in 1969 and completed his JD at Notre Dame in 1973. Some of his fondest memories were from a trip to London during law school, including listening to an album by his favorite artist James Taylor. He was also a 2nd Lieutenant of the Michigan Army National Guard 246th Armor in Dowagiac, Michigan. (Reserve).
After passing the Michigan Bar, Jim found a strong interest in both politics and labor law. His work was published in the Wayne Law Review, and he was appointed to the Michigan Employment Security Board Review, the Michigan Workers Compensation Appeal Board, and named a Michigan Workers Compensation Magistrate by Governors Milliken, Blanchard, and Engler. He enjoyed being a visiting professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School and his work in private practice.
Jim met his wife, Carol, while both working at the Lansing Capitol. They were married within four months of their first date. They spent 44 years traveling, having adventures, and creating lasting memories. Together, they raised two daughters, Jane and Katie, who he spent his life doting on and ensuring they knew how much he loved them.
Dog lover, avid bridge player, history and political news buff, golfer, and Christmas fanatic – Jim had an unmatched wit and was beloved by his family. Jim had the most gentle and upbeat approach to life. He greeted every day with a smile and always responded to the question “how are you” with phrases like “tip top” and “peachy keen”.
Jim is fondly remembered by his family, many relatives, friends, caregivers, neighbors and colleagues. The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date. Should friends desire, contributions in honor of Jim’s life can be made to the Michigan Parkinson Foundation, Hospice of Lansing, or the Lansing Area Parkinson's Support Group (mailed to 2627 Noble Rd., Williamston, MI 48895).
