

John was born on September 20, 1937 and passed away on November 3, 2013. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Julius and Mary (Hruska) Barany. John is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter, Kendra (Eric) DeGroat; son, Jason (Christie) Barany; and grandchildren, Mallory and Cole DeGroat and Bella and Riley Barany. Two brothers, James (Sylvia) Barany and Richard (Linda) Barany also survive. John was an avid woodcarver and was the founder of the Red
Cedar Carvers’ Guild and taught many of its members to carve. He loved golf and often gave private instruction if asked.
John was a very talented artist in painting, sketching and carving. Although he attended the University of Wisconsin, he
became a true Spartan fan. John was the inspiration of many MSU licensed products. Most famous was his “SPARTY ON!”
A memorial service will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes East Chapel, 1730 East Grand River Avenue, East Lansing, Friday, November 8 at 12:00 pm with visitation one hour prior and on Thursday, November 7 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributionsmay be made to Red Cedar River Carver's Guild, 6043 Redondo Dr., Haslett, MI 48840.
